why is row 4 open to gold members at T80 - is this new?

It seems Qantas freed this up somewhat from the initial concept and agents have a little more say.

(Other changes included altering the weighting more for those on award bookings as Altea mostly had them at the back of the queue irrespective of status due to "$0 revenue" factors.)

I think there has been quite a bit of tinkering with things since it was introduced!

... or taking the last remaining seats on a rather full flight.
Another case in point today.

I had 4C on QF557 and got to airport early and asked for earlier flight and was put on QF551 and was given 24D on the 767. Not bad for a change at last minute but that seat could have easily gone to someone without status.

Is 4B better than 5D with a spare seat in 5E?

I had a (very) late notice flight change a couple of days ago, and ended up on QFA632 MEL-BNE and was allocated 4B. Apologised to Mr 4C and Ms 4A (as you would) and noticed that 5D (and E) was vacant - in fact I seemed to be the only middle seat passenger in the front part of the aircraft. Of course I relocated myself to 5D once the seatbelt light was switched off, but an interesting decision by the check-in agent (or the system) - and I would have been one of the last to check in (#130 at about T-35 minutes).

Remeber, with PCV, an SG can have a highr rating than a WP on the same flight.

In reality, how does that occur?
Even if the SG has more forward bookings and is in a higher booking class in the same cabin, it somewhat devalues having status in the first place...

Obviously there are going to be factors relating to PCV that we'll never know about but it just doesn't always add up.

No way, IMO

In my opinion it isn't.

I have been known to refuse seats on earlier flights where the best available seat was a middle seat. I would rather wait to go on my original flight or one at least on a earlier that has at a minimum an aisle seat available.

Let's say a Platinum earns status on AA YUP airfares including 2 return BNE-ROK-MKY flights for ~$200 to get the ~4 QF flights. How high do you think their PCV to Qantas is going to be?

Compare that to a Gold who flies 30 SYD-MEL returns on fully flexible airfares. They are likely to have a very high PCV.

For the record, at the risk of possible ticking off a lot of Platinums. I'm an Bronze with Qantas now after soft landing over the past few years. Selected 4D at T-79ish on a flight from MEL-BNE two weeks ago, plane was about 90% full and the seat next to me vacant.

Oh, so a status within a status...

That could potentially be interpreted as having one set of criteria that has value toward QF and another toward QFF.
This probably has some impact on PCV.

I wonder what would have "greater" value - 1200 SCs earned from QF flight numbers on QF metal vs say 2400 from a combination of QF and non-QF flight numbers on several OW metal flights vs 5000 from predominantly AA YUP fares.
On one hand you have less activity with more "loyalty" (to QF) for the first example, ranging up to more activity with less "loyalty"....

That's not including whatever activity that may have occurred in the preceding years.

Guess we'll never know...
