Colour me corrected - its been one of those morning (bloody EF seats that dont exist in the upper deck)

That's OK - hope the afternoon gets better!

I think that most of these replies are missing the point of the original question which relates to travel MEL-BKK. The reason to fly JQ is to save three hours of extra travel and stuffing around in SYD, each way of course. Makes up for a few free beers on the plane.
The OP compared flying MEL-BKK direct with JQ Y with flying indirect MEL-SYD-BKK on QF Y, and stated the benefits of the former over the latter. And then asked why anyone would choose a less direct and potentially more expensive option.

My replies were addressed the question posed by the OP - as to why I'd rather go the indirect way (and if I were to fly whY - why I would fly QF wHY over JQ wHY). And also that it wasn't necessarily cheaper on JQ, although I'd admit going OT by comparing *class with WTP.

Going direct is great of course as long as the dept and arr time is suitable.
I would pay an extra few hundred to get on a flight more suitable to extreme dept times such as 3:10am

Yeah, my trips with JQ were for lesuire so I wouldn't have minded being delayed as much if it happened. Also it was point-to-point so didn't have to worry about connections, although I see that Jetstar Asia now will allow connections through Singpore, so I suppose they are getting ready to handle all the complexities this brings to an airline.

I suppose QF has better options and handling if something does go wrong. If I was travelling for work, work would pay, so cost no longer becomes a factor in my decision making :)

Sure but JQ29 departs MEL 13.10 and the return JQ30 departs BKK 21.00. Those are okay times.
