Why does Qantas not entertain an overnight flight from Sydney to Singapore?

Haven’t found this topic being discussed but generally interested why.

- Is it slot restrictions for an early arrival in SIN?
- Maxed out capacity between SYD & SIN based on bilaterales?
- Missing airframes?
- Something else?

ChatGBT has no helpful answer for me either…

I haven't looked at the timetables, but as SIN is mainly a transit for QF pax travelling on to UK, I wonder if the arrival time there would be ugly?

I was also thinking links with Jetstar timings within Asia, which may suit (or suit better) to connect to an overnight to SIN but may not suit so well for an early morning return to SYD (or other Australian centre).

Note I've posted the above without actually checking any timetables.

I guess with the SYD curfew they cannot schedule a departure after 11:00pm and realistically would need to give that ¾ hour leeway to allow for minor delays, so 10:15pm.

They schedule up to 7½ hours flight time on that route so that means an inconvenient 3:45am (2:45am in summer) arrival.

Same reason why SQ doesn't have an late departure out of SYD (i.e past 10pm), a very inconvenient arrival time into SIN. SQ used to have a SYD-CBR-SIN service which left SYD around 10pm and got into SIN around ~5am, which made it ok for early morning SQ connections, but without the extra stopover time in CBR, a 10pm departure gets into SIN way too early.

Indeed. Take SQ. Last flight out of SYD is 1805 but out of BNE is 2350. So if you want an overnight flight to SIN come up to Brisvegas and enjoy an SQ flight.
Personally we try to avoid overnight flights.

MH140 departs SYD 2210 and arrives KUL 0500. SYD-KUL is around 30-40 mins longer than SYD-SIN, and 5am is already a very early departure.

During summer, the same flight would arrive an hour earlier, so around a 3.30-4am arrival.

Although Changi is open 24h, I don’t think a 3/4am arrival would suit many travelers. Business pax would probably prefer to arrive later, and tourists would still take the day flight.

I’ve flown MH140 a few times, and I find the early morning arrival very difficult to adjust to. I’d prefer to burn half a day with QF1’s timing.
