Why does Qantas codeshare on Jetstar Domestic flights?

Apologies if this has been answered before but does anyone know why Qantas codeshare on Jetstar domestic flights when you can’t even earn points or SCs with the QF codeshare? There are heaps of QF codeshare flights on Jetstar at the Melb T4 terminal but why do they need to codeshare? Is it to link Qantas bookings to Jetstar (for instance a connection from Qantas flight to Jetstar?)

Codeshare flights with a QF code (but operated by a partner airline like JQ) earn QF points and status credits at the normal rate as if you were flying a Qantas aircraft when crediting to the Qantas frequent flyer program.

Obviously crediting to another program won't earn as oneworld typically requires the flight to be both marketed and operated by a oneworld carrier.

There are also some exceptions to this such as British Airways which allows the earning of avios on the following : "Flights marketed by Qantas but operated by Jetstar booked as oneworld fare in L class only."

There are heaps of QF codeshare flights on Jetstar at the Melb T4 terminal but why do they need to codeshare? Is it to link Qantas bookings to Jetstar (for instance a connection from Qantas flight to Jetstar?)

The whole point of codeshares is the ability to offer additional services/routes where you might not have your own aircraft.

Jetstar services many places that Qantas doesn't or at different times and it allows people to connect from Qantas to Jetstar in a single ticket with the single baggage allowance. It's not very common domestically but there used to be a lot more arriving from overseas and then connection on a Jetstar (but QF marketed flight) to holiday destinations (Ayers rock, Proserpine etc).

In addition, placing the QF code on JQ flights also allows some Jetstar flights to be booked on oneworld Explorer, Global Explorer and Circle Pacific Explorer fares.

Probably. I've had a few JQ flights canceled recently (often the excuse of aircraft maintenance) and rebooking options have included QF flights or different days.

I see. It does seem like a hassle how Qantas doesn’t transfer baggage to Jetstar despite the connecting flights being a QF codeshare, it would be tricky for Qantas to transfer baggage in Melbourne from Terminal 1 to Terminal 4 so I understand why its not possible to transfer checked baggage between flights but it does seem strange that it’s part of a single booking but you are required to re-check in your luggage. You know what I’m saying?

Yes but that happens all the time (well in the days of international travel!) eg I was on one booking London-Dubai-Melbourne (BA/EK) and I had to collect bags in Dubai as BA don’t interline with EK even on same booking.

The real reason I suspect is to increase the yield on JQ flights.
this means more profit for JQ and less for QF so they can bleat when staff ask for more money.
