Why do they turn day into night?

Possibly to help with IFE. I know it works better or me in dim light with the shades down

Yep same with me. As I sit by the window every flight, it is hard to see the IFE when it's bright outside. Of course a lot of the time they are trying to get you used to the new time zone too

I like the shades up.
If we are over land I enjoy looking at it, & also like clouds & the ocean. It makes me more comfortable to be able to see out.

so that people who want to can rest. and so those who want to watch tv can also do that without having the glare.

So have to agree with this. Had one lady sitting in the middle section continually open the blinds on my last HKG trip. Ended up with both my wife and I vomitting due to the migraines it induced.

I'm with you. Even at night there is something interesting to see. If I want to sleep (and I frequently do) then I put on the eye shades.

What about when it's the middle of the night and the cabin is darkened except for the one reading light in the middle of a middle row where the passenger is asleep? Have seen that many times. Never saw a FA try and turn it off. In fact once it's dark I've never seen a FA at all when I've been awake (which is most of the time).

If you want to sleep, use the eye shades. If it messes with the view of your little screen movie then I'm afraid that's what happens when the sun is out.

i do like to turn on my reading light if the window seat closes the blind.

Maybe there isn't enough space to offer a proper dinner service twice. When I hang around in the galley chatting with the crew it seems every inch is used. All of the long haul international flights i've been on have either had a lunch/breakfast or dinner/breakfast. In some instances lunch/dinner would be better but I had never thought of it before this thread.

For daytime flights, shades up for me or st least partially up.

The newer or refurbished planes have better/bigger screens that withstand glare a bit better. On some of the old ones I have no choice bug to put shades down to see a dam thing.

As I mentioned in my recent trip report, the Dreamliner has cool blue windows which can be incrementally darkened, cutting back glare while still allowing a view outside. About the only real difference most passengers will notice, if they ever let it fly again...

It was not always like that. I remember very well my first long haul flight, from Helsinki to Bangkok with Finnair back in 1998. The flight departed at 23.35 or something like that in the dark with all shades up and only in a few hours time the sun was up as we were flying east and I distinctly remember most passengers ahh-ing and ohh-ing looking down at Himalayas, snow dazzling in the sun etc...the shades were never down on that flight which was about 10 hours long

I had a disagreement once with a FA who rudely insisted I put my shade down in the middle of the night - about 3 hours before sunrise. I had to repeat to her 4-5 times that I would put it down before daylight, as I wouldn't (and never can) be sleeping.

In my experience the Asian flights are the worst. I think the FAs know there is a tendency, for whatever reason, for passengers on those flights to be able to sleep no matter the time of day or length of flight. The noodle cups run out in the first hour then they can chortle endlessly in the galley with their hand-me-down champagne.

Coming home on an overnight flight from Asia, there's nothing like the sight of looking down over this wide brown land at sunrise… goosebumps, every time

IMHO it depends on what time of day it is when you land,

I flew SYD-HKG and it was a day flight so lights where on and they didn't worry about the blinds,

When we had the afternoon suns they did close that side of the plane so we didn't get blasted with the hot sun.

They are not 100% sun blocking either. They are close, but not quite. Some airlines are actually ordering 787's with traditional shutters as a result now.

Rather inconsiderate of you.

Shutting the blinds makes it easier for me to see the IFE. My eyes get to look at the screen without the glare coming from the side.

So we should all sit in the dark because someone doesn't have the physical ability to put on their eye shades?

I always thought the FAs wanted the blinds down during day flights to try and send the pax off to sleep (even if it was the middle of the day) because sleeping pax require a lot less work than awake pax?

I was referring more to the movie screen part of BAM's comment, hence I'd underlined it when quoting.
