Why do airlines put service kit above row 1?

Not sure if this has been asked/discussed earlier but I cannot find it if it has.

I do not understand why airlines put service kit in the overhead luggage bins above the bulkhead seats (e.g. row 1 on short-haul). As there is no under-seat stowage it makes no sense to me.

Any ideas why?

Depends what you mean by 'service' kit?

If they are items related to safety, that is one position close to where they can be obtained quickly in an emergency.

Crew bags - stowing them there mean the crew can keep an eye on them. Service items - again - close to the galley where they can be obtained easily when needed.

Video, crew bags, trays etc. They might be convenient for crew but make stowing bags for bulkhead seats very difficult and correct stowage in the overhead bins is a major safety matter so provision needs to be made for this
 
They drive me crazy... here's QF's commitment to storage space for row 1 customers, on some of its B737s....

The one on the right full of safety stuff, and the one on the left is locked = no space overhead for row 1.

that type of arrangement is not uncommon.

The alternative for pax bag stowage is to have business class board before all other pax - American style.
 
I would suggest that there is a distinct lack of storage for these things on shorthaul aircraft and to create storage you would probably have to lose seating space which means less seats which means less revenue. Not a smart financial decision for an airline.

Considering the equipment that is located above row 1 is emergency equipment (nothing service related) having your bag above you is not a major safety provision, it simply needs to be stowed which can be safely done in a locker behind you. I'm not quite sure I understand why putting the bag less than a metre behind you is very difficult.

You are assuming that there is actually space in the bin behind row 1. Any further back and it becomes impossible to retrieve bags after landing. As unstowed luggage is a serious safety hazard it really is important to have enough storage space for row 1. I had move row 2 bag to the back of the bin to fit my small bag in and got a dirty look. There was nowhere else left... There are other places for first aid kit (e.g above the wardrobe).

Airlines who make it easy for premium pax to stow bags easily will do better.

the aircraft won't be cleared for pushback unless luggage is stowed, so there isn't any safety hazard in that respect. if the aircraft isn't going anywhere there's no danger.

there should be plenty of storage space in business class on 737 aircraft given the reduced number of seats and increased pitch per row. if other passengers can't store their bags as efficiently as possible that is a problem, but generally not too hard to sort out... but it doesn't always mean having to shift other people's bags. sometime you have to put your bag in an available space which might be a row or two behind where you'd like. or be amongst the first to baord.

overhead bin space above row 1 being occupied by airline equipment is common on narrow body aircraft. I assume designed that way for ease of access to emergency equipment as required, not to make life as difficult as possible for passengers :)
