I was just talking to Qantas on the phone and asked for a classic reward to be released one-way for SYD-JNB and a normal fare the other way. I was told they would release a classic award but I could not book the return with it and I would have to book the return as a one-way and as usual the one way only fare cost is a lot more. I did ask why and was told that you need to use points and pay to combine classic rewards and paid fares, she then went on to say she couldn't do points and pay over the phone for me.

Is what I told true or was she telling me porkies?

AFAIK the QF computer system won't handle it on international. Since award availability is now shown for domestics, I'll let someone else answer that portion of the question.
With respect to JNB, make certain that you pay for the one-way segment exJNB, as it will "amazingly" be a lot cheaper than exAustralia...
Better yet, if you have international travel scheduled in the next year, get the exJNB ticket as a round trip... And continue the journey much more cheaply while (potentially) earning a lot more points.

Happy wandering
