who takes out travel insurance for trans Tasman or domestic travel

Why would I be kidding? I've explained my reasoning. Much easier ways for airline to save costs starting with executive salaries and number of executives employed.
You think chopping a dozen or so exec people off (so who will run the company while shut down? Not to mention regulatory requirements etc)

The salaries of those execs wouldn’t pale into comparison with the frontline staff.

A dozen executives at $2-$3 million a year + benefits is quite a lot. How many frontline staff at $60-$80K a year would have been in a job and provided valuable support when the airline started up again after covid instead of hiring total newcomers.

And it's more than a dozen executives.

John can you please quote where these figures are coming from? I am not sure of how exact/true these are but they seem to be current Average Virgin Salary in Australia in 2023 | PayScale

I saw an article on it but now cannot find the article. I could be totally wrong but there's a lot of conflicting information out there. They talk about base salary and bonuses such as $21mil bonus for Alan Joyce and $2 mil base salary for Vanessa Hudson increasing to $5.8mil after bonuses.

An executive assistant makes between $105,000 and $180,000 year. If that is true they are paid more than pilots and flight attendants?

Lots of talk on the thread about Credit Card insurance but there are many levels and cover for credit card insurance.
I originally invested in an ANZ Black card because the policy gave me equivalent cover to the annual travel policy I had at the time, and much better than the standard ANZ CC.
It was also much better, at that time, than the equivalent Amex product, although the Amex cover seems to have improved.
I have made small claims for a damaged computer, and a small ding on a hire car without problems (I haven't taken our car hire company insurance for more than 20 years).
I do also do make sure I read the policy every couple of years to make sure I am still happy

Never travel without it, can now get annual from at least 2 companies - I am over 80 with no medical conditions, and travel reqularly, domestic, overseas and cruising.
It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.
It also means that I can travel at any time, short notice without having to apply once agasin.
Have only had to claim once - some years ago, all was paid out except a small excess.

As an older Australian would love to know which company you use for TI, as it's a minefield for us oldies.

I got a quote from Aus Seniors for 7 days in Bali, $265, then they wanted an extra $95 to cover my hypertension, this was for 2 of us, 68 and 67.
14 days cancellation, so I looked around, 1cover was $196 including my issues. Canceled the first one.
I have made only one claim in a very long time, that was the damaged passport debacle. I do however like to be sure!

Please could you post the companies you can get an annual TI from. Very interested as my husband is over 80and I haven’t had much luck so far, but he does have some pre existing medical conditions.

Interesting. I priced Aus Seniors and 1Cover for 7 weeks in Europe, prices were similar (65 and 74) with Seniors about 15% more. Zero extra from Seniors for a past BCC and Osteoarthritis, 1Cover wanted $35 extra for each condition.

I find insurance prices vary hugely between insurers depending on destination. Company A may have best price if visiting the USA, someone else if going to EU.

This is why to date I have not been able to find a good value annual policy, as soon as you add US and South America the price goes crazy; and Im of working age with no pre-existing conditions.

Yet if do separate policy for each trip the total cost of the year for me has always been $200 or more lower over all.

YMMV
