Who has used QF Next Gen check-in Perth?

Will definitely have luggage, but travelling alone. Going for the Ashes Tests in Melbourne and Sydney amongst other things. The joys of being single ... but leaving PER at 0800 on Christmas Day took a bit of persuasion (read, sweetening) of the folks!

OLCI was probably going to be the safest option anyway, but everyone wants to try out the new toy!

You can still OLCI and then use NGCI.

No doubt, after all it is Perth...

I think it pays to remember this is exactly the reason they are doing a limited trial, to work out all the issues!

Not referring to you specifically, but everytime I hear someone moan about an error and how bad it is I actually think 'Great!' because that person has helped bug check the system

Totally agree. I look forward to using it later in the year, and hopefully all the bugs (if there are any that they haven't already identified) will be ironed out before it goes system wide, or at least into the bigger ports.

I used it once. The totem pole checkin is quick - if it works properly. The machine has an LCD display, but it doesn't tell you anything useful.

In my case, it checked me in but the SMS took over 20mins to arrive so I ended up clearing security and using the QP QuickCheck machine to get a BP just to see where i was sitting. I used that to enter the QP and board, so I didn't end up testing the paperless aspect.

I would like the pole to display "Checked in for QFxx_ departing XX:XX Seat 1A" instead of just "You have been Checked in".

I remember a couple of years at Xmas back lil bro was in HKG, Dad in SYD, Mum in MEL, me in DRW & SO in POM! Just as well Mum said "you don't have to celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day".

Why not celebrate it on Christmas Eve & take plenty of snaps so in years to come you can look back at your photos of 'Christmas Day' (ie 24Dec) & your folks may not remember you weren't actually there on the day.

You can't exactly get the red eye on Xmas night then do a full day at the cricket. I remember doing an all night shift then going to see Australia play Bangladesh at TIO Stadium Marrara but wouldn't do that again as it was way too hard to stay awake.

Can an IT guru tell me why they can’t develop their own OS/base their systems on a simpler OS? Is the cost just too high?

I'm guessing it's part of an integrated suite for their reservation system.

There's no reason they couldn't use POSIX compliant OS's or others, but Windows tends to make big inroads into corporate and they try and sell it as a low TCO when often it isn't.

We'll never really know I guess.

But there's no reason to re-invent the wheel. It's just as easy to take a core OS (be it Windows Server/*nix/BSD etc) and build what you need on top of it. Different solutions will suit different situations, but sometimes the wrong solution is implemented.

I've seen ATM's (I believe it was ANZ) crashed out at the windows screen. As others have said there is no need to build solutions from the base OS upwards.

To build your own system from the ground up you'd need

- The Base OS
- Drivers for all hardware
- A set of libraries for standard protocols
- IT Support (keep in mind you can't easily replace technical people for a completely custom system, thus existing people can start naming their price)


and then you may not even end up with something as stable as had you simply used a pre-existing system and built on top of that. Furthermore just because it's custom, doesn't make it more secure.
