Doing a RTW for business, mainly on OW airlines but some USA and EU flights are with SA airlines of which I don't have reward programme membership.

Is there a particluar SA airline award scheme that I should join over any other?

ie, is SQ > NZ > UA, etc

Does it really matter?

It doesn't sound like you fly *A very much and on that basis I suggest a program that doesn't have mileage expiry. It also doesn't sound like status is a concern but correct me if I'm wrong.

BMI's diamond club has a very generous earn/burn ratio (more so with Cash and Miles), as well as a 600 miles minimum for partner flights. Plus miles do not expire. Even if BMI is eventually bought by LH, your miles will automatically roll into LH's M+M program, or you'd have adequate notice and burn out your mileage account asap.
