My 75 year old mother is flying from SYD-LHR on May 30 on BA16 in WT+ and returning on July 4 LHR-SYD on July 4 on BA15 also in WT+.

I'm looking at Seat Guru and trying to check what is the best seating available but to confuse matters it's showing two 747-400 variants and I'm not sure which ones operate on the SYD-LHR-SYD route.

At the moment she is assigned 29D SYD-LHR and 30G LHR-SYD.

BA16 on 30th May is the 744 config with 14F, 70J, 30W and 177Y seats. Her current 29D on that flight will be a good choice. 28D is not yet occupied, but is blocked by BA. That is the bulkhead row. Perhaps a call to BA explaining her elderly condition and desire for a bulkhead row for easier access to/from the seat may result her relocation.

Her return BA15 flight is the same aircraft config. Her 30G is quite an ok seat. Again the bulkhead row is not yet allocated but is blocked (for high status BA members). A phone call to BA may result in a move forward. The coveted 28B and 28J (single seats) are also unallocated but blocked on both flights.

NM thanks for the quick feedback, I'll pass on the info to my Mother.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to butt in on your discussion .... would you mind telling a newbie like me how you can check your seat allocation three months so far in advance?

I'm travelling in June and would like to know what I have been allocated and whether I can change my seat allocation if necessary.

I used ExpertFlyer to view the seat maps for the flights in question.

Most airlines, including BA and QF, permit pre-allocation of seating on their international flights. Its a matter of calling the airline and making a seating request. However, once a certain percentage of the cabin has been pre-allocated, no further pre-allocations are permitted except for high-level frequent flyers.

Couldn't see any pre-allocated seat numbers on CheckMy Trip. Don't fly enough to warrant ExpertFlyer. So guess I will have to resort to the old dog 'n' bone.

Thanks.

Yes, making a booking does not always generate a seat preallocation unless you request it.

When the www.checkmytrip.com display comes up, look for small boxes with orange background containing little +'s near the bottom left corner of each of the rectangles showing your flight segments.

Click these and if a seat is allocated you may should a seat number beside "Seating". If there is a seat number, click on that and a pop up window will appear; showing a seat map if available.

If "seating" only shows something like "non smoking" beside this seat number it means no seat has been preallocated; call Qantas and request seating.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
