Which new camera

I have a Canon 5D that I love and use my iPhone 4 for lots of photos too. But for family use and general travel, I'm looking for something in-between the two and a Sony NEX-5 looks to be just the thing.

Not actually a DSLR because it doesn't have a mirror, but it has the same large sensor as the Canon crops and interchangeable lenses. It's light and full featured.

When I bought my DSLR, I shopped around looking at Nikon and Cannon, and in the end chose the cannon due to the easy manual controls compared to the Nikon D range that seemed at the time too complicated.

The downside of the Cannon brand is that it is only available at nightmarkets in certain Asian countries

Having said that, I am a fan of Canon. I should get my AE1 out and see if it still works

SWMBO has a Canon G10 (predecessor of the G11 and G12) and swears by it. I'm thinking of getting something similar.

that NEX 5 doesn't look all that pretty though does it...

hmmm, i guess i might be being pushed towards the new Canon 600D, won't be quite the compromise that the Nikon D5000 might be... spend an extra couple of hundred dollars on the purchase to do it right first time... although for the same price i could get the D5000 and go the full Nikkor lense instead of the Tamron one... will have to wait and read some reviews just to check that it is an actual improvement over the 550D...

does everyone agree all those filters and lens hoods etc are a worthwhile buy??? i've never really used them...

Eye of the beholder, eh? I think they look pretty cool.

I don't use filters much, but always use a lens hood to keep stray rays away and also as a handy shock absorber if ever dropped.

A bit like the Victornix luggage we recently saw at a certain shopping complex in KL eh? LOL

I still think a polaroid filter is a plus for outside shots in full sun, or night shots when the 'Neon' glare will spoil a good pic.
Agree with a lens hood, great for air shots, and sun glare.

I've got a Pentax K-x DSLR. It was amongst the cheapest that I could find and I've always had a good run with that brand. Current retail pricing in Australia is under $700. It uses SD cards, which are cheap, easily available and compatible with lots of other stuff.

It comes standers with an 18-55 lens and while in LOTFAP I bought an 18-200 for about $US300.

The big advantage to me is that it uses standard AA batteries. It chews through normal Ni-Cd batteries pretty quickly but I can get more than 600 shots out of Eveready Lithiums
