With the current triple points offer, I am deciding whether to pay cash, or use my points for a MEL-OOL trip.

I am tossing up the following options.

1. Getaway fare $142.64 (using discount code, get triple points and possibly 2.1% Cashrewards)
2. Elevate fare $161.65 (using discount code, get triple points, platinum 100% bonus and possibly 2.1% Cashrewards)
3. Freedom fare $258.68 (using discount code, get triple points, platinum 100% bonus and possibly 2.1% Cashrewards)
4. Freedom fare as per No. 3, and use my complementary J upgrade.
5. Y Reward 11,800 points + $25.52 in taxes
6. J Reward 23,500 points + $27.72 in taxes
7. Anyseat Getaway fare 19,300 + $33.25 in taxes (get triple points)
8. Anyseat Elevate fare 22,400 + $35.06 in taxes (get triple points and platinum 100% bonus)
9. Anyseat Freedom fare 39,900 + $45.61 in taxes (get triple points and platinum 100% bonus)

Considerations:
a. Anniversary date is in Jan 2020.
b. Do not plan to retain platinum and will just soft land to gold
c. Travelling in J would be nice, but for a 2 hour journey, I have no problem in YX.
d. Will not have a chance to use the 4 complementary J upgrades if I don't use it this time, but don't feel like paying Freedom just to use the upgrades.
e. Planning to go to CNS sometime in the next 12 months. Better off just flying in Y this time and book J return when travelling to CNS?
f. Multiply the above by 2 as +1 and I are travelling. He is silver.

ARRRGGGHHH... so many choices... Can someone help me narrow down my options?

I'd probably go for the paid Elevate fare. Less than $20 gets you some extra FFPs and (unneeded) SCs. Go anyseat Elevate if you have points to burn and like saving money.

If you have a Plat upgrade available, just go for a paid Freedom fare. $258 for a flight of this length is about as cheap as it gets in the Freedom fare category, and that's not a terrible price to pay for 2 hours in J. The triple points promo is an added bonus.

I wouldn't waste points on an Any Seat award.

I would go either 2 or 4.
Depends on what chance I had of using the upgrade cert - but since there is a J award available the cert should be good to go.

@kyle you didn't mention one way or return for your trip. The following are for one way.

I would go No. 10 - via SYD/CBR for an extra $20 each on the Freedom fare.

Before booking I would make sure at least 2 business rewards were available on each flight and immediately call up to upgrade. (Fwiw, it's only 4900 point per sector to upgrade using points - you could do that online without calling).

Since you are WP, with triple points you would earn ~5600 points one way, PS earns ~4900. Between you there is also 100 SC earn @ 25 per segment; presumably there is pooling involved.

So, all up, for $280 each, you'd earn ~10500 Velocity points and 100 SC's.

Double those figures if return.

Going one-way only. As travelling with +1, he's not keen on indirect flights unless necessary.

I shouldn't need to use points for the upgrade since I get use my unused complementary upgrades?

Correct ... it's moot due to you having upgrade me platinum benefits but points cost for the direct upgrade would be 7400 each.

On a direct flight, total point earn @$260 each for the two of you would be ~9750 and SC earn 60.

Thanks to everyone's inputs. I went for 4 and now looking forward to MEL-OOL and spending a few days on Daydream Island on that trip.
