question for the experts out there - where is the best place to be posting "q" class miles? most likely a QF segment from oz to japan, then AA segment to US and vice versa. Being a QFF posting the QF segment is fine, but what about the AA "Q" class? Don't think it is an eligible class right? What about AA's FF program? Or any other OW program - would be a waste of miles otherwise...

I presume you've bought one of the AA SYD etc-U.S.A type fares.

The QF Q class fares credit to Qantas fine. The AA fares credit to AA fine.

Joining the AA scheme is free, and is actually a decent scheme for redemptions.

I can't recall the expiry date for their miles, but believe it's 18 months or more.

Pretty simple to get the FF scheme swapped during the travel. I've been down this exact same path before.

It's a pity the AA chalenges have been tightened up. That flight plus some internal US flights would easily make their gold or platinum status (ie similar to Qantas Silver or Qantas Gold).
