And now, yes, here the waffly, Kogan which is one of the sim provider, says its IMIE # shows it overseas specs, so even though its VOLte, now have to spend $ to get a cheaper one from Officeoworks, has to be dual, so its now an outlay of $495 or so.
The Aus gov is very cunning, in the workings, with the providers, they would have made a financial k(lling from all of us who bought 4g phones, from ebay overseas sellers, thinking thats enough.
But nope to be able to call 000, its has to be to Aus specifications.
As if making millions from the shutdown of 3g to push people to 4g/5g is not enough, now have to get a new mobile (again), and it has to be made to Aus specifications, so those ebay ones in the end, in a few months, will be no good.
Yes, I did call Kogan up, and they said, it all relies on the IMIE #.
You might get an sms if you are with Kogan, or another provider.

I'm not quite sure what the post is about. If this is about the new standards for mobiles in Australia, theres plenty of discussion about it in places like whirlpool, reddit and even places like OzB.

Its been like this for a few years now. Importing phones on your own to Australia is now a dyor to make sure it works with the network. I remember going through this song and dance when I was helping my wife decide her previous phone.

What a load of rubbish from the OP, tries to save a few pennies by buying overseas phones and then claims the government is making a motza by insisting said phones are locked out of the local networks!
You are breaking the law by using a phone on a network in Australia without the regulatory compliance mark, full stop.

Just go and do a google search.
Lots of blah out there.
Imported phones, will be useless after 2027.
If the IMEI (sorry I put IMIE # is overseas based), and the phone cant call 000, then you will need a new phone.
Just wait till you get something from your provider.

I blame ebay and overseas sellers of mobile phones.

How is the AU govt or any one else making millions?
I did buy a new Samsung phone due to 3G shutdown, so Au Govt~State govt got a little GST. Anyway a lot of people buy a new phone every few years [ I do not ]

It will/may be issue for visitors to AU from UK, USA etc

Afaik, all the blame now is on the Telcos being lazy. Thats also why a phone can work on Telstra and Vodafone but fail Optus (and vice versa).

They are white-listing phones. Yes white listing - adding them to a list thats approved. It has less to do with their capabilities now and whether the telco has white listed the phone or not.

So a phone can be 100% technologically compliant but because Vodafone didn't add it into the list, they're going to be blocked.

Was your former phone still working, and was still working if 3g had been kept on?

Anyone who had a 3g phone, and was still working, if 3g was kept on, would have kept using it.
Didnt have to buy a 4g phone, but they decided to close off 3g, so lots had to buy a 4g phone, but it was not well made public, or known, that even if that 4g phone, has volte, etc, or 5g, but overseas spec, that phone might not be able to call 000.
Ebay sellers make money, kogan selling refub and other selling refub phones, from overseas, would have made money.
Anyway, if I do is make waffly, wait and see what happens down the road, track, runway, will those overseas bought mobile phones, really stop working.
From the sms from Kogan I got, I would have a month, then my Kogan service would be cut off.
Went to Officworks earlier on today, and got a new Aus sold (spec) dual sim phone, ... $49*, ...

And now Optus wants me to verify id again, even tho I had done it at a store, they probably want it digitalized, heh, after the recent breach, (which had my old id), now new Aus citizen id.
I know, waffly, but still, all this just for a mobile phone service.
Does sit have to cost so much $ and time?
