Where is the line between paid advertising and child exploitation with AFF?

Given you have both met me, I think you most probably know that "steroi_ alternatives" and/or "beefed up young boys" does not make my search engine. I'm not sure why I've taken such a dislike to this particular ad, but I find it particularly repulsive.

It's not about you or what AFF thinks you may like, it's what google thinks you might be interested in, maybe you read a news article on body building or steroi_s or similar, google sees that as a bite on the bait.

I think the real question raised was 'Does this ad have a place on AFF?'

Probably not, hence the suggestion to let admin know the company details etc so they can be blocked, in the context of the site we have 40000 odd registered members who each will likely get a different ad, the odd bad apple is bound to pop up once in a while.

Sometimes, it just doesn't make sense ... what is classified as 'appropriate'.

Up until a few months ago, I worked for a high profile private hospital in Sydney, where they had a 'young adult' mental health unit ...

Having inpatients with eating disorders and depression ( among other conditions ), you would think 'management' would have seen the issue with allowing all the womens' glossies ( magazines ) in there ... ( not to mention the unrestricted WiFi access for their laptops in their rooms )

Nope, they said it was up to the young people themselves, to draw their own conclusions etc.

Just waiting for my opportunity to 'give evidence'. For that workplace, it's only a matter of time ...

So you are saying just because someone is obese or anorexic that they shouldn't be allowed to look at what a beautiful person looks like in a magazine? Yet they are in a hospital because they don't have a healthy lifestyle, and dream of being the beautiful person in the magazine that you want to hide from them. Why do you consider that the workplace is doing the wrong thing? Would you prefer they just said to these people " oh its ok, just go and barf up all your food" or " it's ok if you have eaten the last six hamburgers I will go get some more " then expect the person to hide from the obvious. I personally think they would be in more strife for not doing what they are. People are free to read what they want

With regards to patients with depression and mental health issues, are you suggesting that they should not be able to access the internet or magazines when other patients can? They do have to learn to manage in the real world so maybe doing this in a controlled clinical environment is exactly what should be happening.

OK, so I've learnt a few things about the seedy world of internet advertising. I'll withdraw now from this conversation before it goes too far OT and go and come to grips with the concept that Google, in it's infinite wisdom, now believes I'm a guy who harbours a desire to view steroi_ type ads featuring young boys..........lucky I'm not feeling suicidal tonight :( and one has to wonder just how far wrong these "targeted" ads can end up.

I agree such ads aren't pleasant but they aren't directed at you personally. It's just Google at work. I get some weird ones too but don't look inwards to understand why I see them. I've seen that lads photo before in a news website.

Child exploitation is one thing, but targeting men of a 'certain age' is well beyond the pale.
Though you almost have to admire their 'Whack-a mole' persistence.

I have also seen this ad on many other sites.Last was facebook.
What intrigues me is that since I revealed that I was loosing weight on a post on AFF my facebook ads have nearly all been for weight loss pills and potions.
Scary.
Can you spare some magic pills.

FWIW I do a lot of hotel searches and almost every site I visit shows me ads for the hotels I have been searching. It can get very tiring after 1 or 2 ads.
