With the AFF gathering on this weekend, http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...events/aff-gathers-melbourne-1-3-a-12837.html
I thought it would be interesting to find out when you was first time you met someone from the internet from a discussion forum.

For me it was March 2002 when I went to Townsville for a weekend and I had a few spare hours so I met up with someone I had met from the internet.

So when was it for everyone else. Maybe a FT or AFF gathering was your first time.

From memory, would have been having drinks with Lindsay Wilson on one of his trips to Perth (stevePER was there as well)

Interesting question.....

Can't say I've met anyone from a random web based source such as a public discussion forum.

That said, it'll be interesting walking into a room with 20+ people who I've never held dialogue with either in person or via the telephone.

For me it was the 2004 FT Xmas meet on Nov 30th; I met quite a few over 25 minutes and 3 HP's.

Easy to find at the designated FT corner - first guy I spoke to was thadocta (Hi Dave, sent any PM's to newbies lately;))

I'd come across AFF/FT two weeks earlier; In July I had booked flights MEL-SYD and SYD-BNE (end-on-end) return flights for that evening, transferring though SYD. (back than MEL-BNE was 10 SC's in discount WHY), for ~ $115 each rt, also had upgraded to J [no restrictions on upgrading back then either])

Can anyone bet 1994?:D

Was at the dawn of WWW, I was still holding on to Gopher.

Oh the memmories, Using a UWA internet dialin that I "borrowed". Then the days of a simple "Hex" edit of an OZEmail install disk that would get you unlimted time to "signup" or perhaps do other things :D

My first meet-up wasn't a pre-arranged one. I met someone in a pub who I happened to have been chatting for ages with already on gaydar. This was probably back in 2002.

For me meeting up with Seat 2A (from FT) for a beer at MEL airport in early 2003. A few months later went to Oz Fest 1 in Sydney.

It seem from posts above seems many have meet first thru FT - AFF. Have yet to meet anyone from the internet who is not associated with FT or AFF

We'll be needing a who did you meet on FidoNet thread the way this is going :)

As for the WWW, Lynx was the first 'browser' I used!

At midnight I was thinking TCP/IP :D:D

Forgot all about the x-modem and the improved speed z-modem days :D

Lynx,
Trumpet Winsock (who would have though Tassie connected everyone to the Internet)
Bulletin Board's....

My first PC came from Imagineering - Jodie Rich's PC company before he started one.tel (also went broke) - an XT Turbo if I remember correctly (that is before 286s)

Come out of the woodwork and show hands if you have any idea what I am talking about :)
Oh yes, I remember those days and my 300baud modem (later upgraded to 1200/75 baud) and BBS (before most BBS's were connected to the Internet) - in those days, the people I was chatting with were people I already knew in real life - mostly friends from Uni. My first web browser (which came along later) was Mosaic - the uni project that was the precursor to Netscape Navigator.

I think this was when I found out that Mwenenzi was really Alan:cool::mrgreen:

Feb 03 for me via FT on this thread:mrgreen:: FT meeting - BNE QC, 21 Feb, 2.30pm onwards - FlyerTalk Forums

That Lindsay Wilson person again appears to be responsible...:p

The first time I had met someone from AFF was on December 26 2005, Boxing Day, invited by Lindsay Wilson to the BNE First Class Lounge. I was off to SIN then BKK whilst Lindsay and Vicky were on their way to the good old US of A.

Since then I have been to 3 Ozfests, an FT AGM in BNE, a Kiwi Mainland Do and countless meetings at airports (most notable the F lounge run last year), Golf clubhouses (Ric), Holiday Inns, Grand Finals to meet up with wonderful people who all have a common hobby/passion.

It is sad to miss the AFF gathering this weekend but I will at CHC for the Kiwi Mainland DO, the next FT AGM in BNE and hopefully next Ozfest in CNS....

I met some people from a TV discussion forum in about 2002 I think - things really changed on the forum after that...
