Me and my partner need to go to LHR end of December, come back in January, and trying to use either my QF or VS points for it.

Tried it on Qantas web site a week ago, no seat. A few days ago, it gave me seats on a BA flight on 24/12 . Tried again now, it gave me seats on BA and QF on 24/12. More seats becoming available?

Now, the big problem is, both QF and VS don't have any seat to come back to Australia in January, the whole January.

So, should I wait a few more weeks, to try to use my points? Or should I hand over my cold hard cash now?

VS web site states more FF seats will become available closer to departure day. Does the same apply to QF?

I am worried that the cash price for the tickets will go up as we go closer to December?

I'd can your idea of getting f/f seats and hand over your cash now.

The chance of seats coming up over high season less than 6 months out is pretty remote and you'll find paid seats begin to fill up quickly from here on with expats going back to UK etc for Xmas.

I guess that's why there are seats on 24th, because everyone needs to get home before X'mas. This is very clear as discount economy (it is personal trip, need to go via cattle class) on 24/12 is $1000 cheaper than 23/12.

I am happy to go on 24, as we are just going on holiday, not to meet anyone.

What I wonder is will they release seats later on, for LHR - SYD in JAN?

As you can guess by now, this is my first time trying to use FF point during peak / shoulder

I second Travel_Guru here, for awards at that time of the year, you need to start looking the full 353 days out (especially for J/F class).

Most award seats around Christmas would be gone by the end of January, certainly the end of February.
