If you ever find yourselves in Adelaide, it's really easy to negotiate the airport-city journey. The city is only a stone's throw away by car/taxi, and it's not that difficult to navigate around. But if you want to stay fairly near the airport, I recommend the Stamford Grand at Glenelg, which boasts a really good breakfast. But it is busy at brekky time, so book. Glenelg also has some great places to eat along Jetty Rd, outside the Stamford.

Places to stay - you don't really need an airport hotel because of the proximity of the airport to the city, but I can recommend the Hilton on Victoria Square, and if you want a 'tucked away' hotel, the Rendezvous Allegra is also nice.

There are also a lot of serviced apartments, including Quest, along King William Street, which are also very nice, and right in the middle of the CBD.

Along North Terrace, at the top of the CBD, you have the Hyatt and Stamford Plaza. There's also the Embassy (a fairly new hotel, with some really nice views) - all FF partners. The Radisson is also here, but it is a fair walk along North Terrace, and a bit of a way away. I would choose the Hyatt (or for longer stays, max the FF points with the Stamford) - both are very good. The gym at the Hyatt is superb, and the Shiki restaurant serves up great Japanese Teppanyaki with good service and some great wines (WA Chardonnays have to be tried here). There is also a very extensive whisky list in the bar - probably the one place in ADL I have found John Walker Green and John Walker Gold.

Also along North Terrace, there is the Qantas building, just in case you need to fix up any tickets etc.

The Hilton is slap bang outside Chinatown and Central Market, where you can always get some good food at a reasonable price. The Grange (in the Hilton) is also very good for a business dinner (ask about the seafood, called the 7 dances of the sea. It's a signature dish, each matched to a wine perfectly).

If you have the luck/money, I can also recommend the concierge floors of both the Hilton and Hyatt.

As for North Adelaide - this is also very nice. There are a lot of eateries along Melbourne Street and O'Connell Street, but North Adelaide is a little bit out of the CBD. You'd be well advised to have a car, if you can. There are serviced apartments along here, and personally, I would stay at the Vines or the Lion (don't confuse with the Lion Hotel) serviced apartments.

I can recommend Zapata's for Mexican in North Adelaide, JoJo's for pizzas, and along War Memorial Drive, there is a little place called 'Red Ochre', and if you want to impress some international clients, take them here. You can get a la carte Australian-influenced food here - and the wine list is not bad too. Service is great, and there's some things here that are definitely 'never tasted that before' dishes.

If you fancy a drive, go to Windy Point (just head along Pulteney Street, out of the city and keep going), drive up through the Adelaide Hills (you can't miss it) and you'll find 'Cafe Lago', and the Windy Point restaurant. For romantic dinners, this place has a superb view of Adelaide at night, with all the lights, and great desserts.

You forgot to mention the best thing about a trip to Adelaide - the last leg of the return flight.... :)

As Peter Berner once said at the conclusion of "Backberner":

"And to those of you living in Adelaide who are travelling interstate tomorrow......I understand."

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

ooh, you naughty man.

Now that was a bit harsh. :D

I'd sooner drink West End Draught anyday than VB / Carlton Draught. :D

And at last, it looks like Geoff Dixon may have signed the piece of paper that allows ADL to have a decent airport. At last.

Well, we shall all hold our breath until November then, shan't we, Mr. Rann ? :)

When in Adelaide

Myself and Mrs Camoz1 are travelling Bne-Adl in September. Staying at Novotel for 2 nights - has anyone stayed and can you give me run down of the hotel???

Then have 3 few days in Barossa and McLaren Vale - as you do.....then back to Adelaide for night at Rendezvous before flying back to BNE. Is Rendezvous nice hotel - 5 star apparently??

Rendevous Allegra (near Franklin Street) is VERY nice. :)

I take it that's the Novotel on Hindley. Even though Hindley St has a bit of a bad rap in some guidebooks, it's not THAT bad. Kings Cross is worse.

The reason for the 'bad rap' is that there's a few strip clubs and x-rated shops there. But it's pretty safe, and I would actually feel more at risk walking through some parts of MAN (UK) or NYC at night. The Novotel is a nice place, I've got an industry conference there in a few months and that's where they're putting the delegates from Holden and Mitsubishi. You can't really go wrong in ADL, and anywhere within the CBD is fine.

If you're in Barossa, I can recommend the Barossa Novotel on Rowland Flat. This is VERY nice (but a little pricey). They have a golf course there, and that's where I went to see 'Barossa under the Stars' with Rod Stewart in concert.

Hope this helps. :D

When in Adelaide

Thanks Icemann. Yes Novotel in Hindley Street. I've heard Rendezvous is very nice - Mrs Camoz1 doesn't know we are staying there so bit of a surprise.

We are booked in for one night at Novotel Barossa Valley Resort. It looks nice and I got it on Accor Hot Deals site for $125 for the night including buffet breakfast for 2 the night we are staying. I thought that was extraordinary considering some of the B&B's I had priced out that way.

No worries. :D

Rendevous is very nice (and all three of your hotels are FF members).

You got a good price. The Novotel at Barossa is sometimes pricey (esp. for Barossa Under The Stars) and there are a lot of B+B's out that way that are expensive. It's a nice place, and I believe there's even a golf course. :)

Sorry, but trains (even as nice as the Ghan) don't do it for me.

It's a bit pricey, when I could fly up there instead for about a quarter of the price.

When you cost in all meals on train for 5 days plus Hotels at other end, AND factor in the adventure factor it is a really excellent deal it looks like to me.

Brand new train .. and this is HALF price. But you need to want to get there overland of course.

Camoz mate,

I am in the Novotel Hindley Street, ADL right now and it is a nice place. The pool is pretty good and the spa is great. Sauna is hot. They have a small, but functional gym - the only other gyms that I have visited that I would recommend more are the one in the Metropole, HK (Kowloon side), Pathumwan Princess, Bangkok (very good) and the Hyatt ADL (which IS a health club, but more of a poser's one).

I just wanted to update this thread and let everyone know that the Novotel is a nice little place, good quality and very friendly. You won't be disappointed and it is good value for the money (but get a corporate / industry rate)
