When DYKWIA becomes the full <airline> tanty

re: When DYKWIA becomes the full <airline> tanty

I was tempted to pull one of these moves recently when lining up for the security at the gate. On the walk over other gates had a separate First/Business line but my gate just had the one line. I only realised this after I played it uber-cool and didn't bother lining up when people first started to form a line. I then patiently waited in line, but was irritated by people just sneaking in at the front from the opposite side of the line grr..

I feel this way when families with children are invited to board early, and they have an 8yr with a Bieber haircut and stupid slanted hat... I want to put my DYKWIA hat on and police the "Really, that's not a baby/toddler!" line.

re: When DYKWIA becomes the full <airline> tanty

Why is it a "Qantas tanty"? My first thought was of AJ grounding the airline, but a tanty of those proportions is hard to top :)

re: When DYKWIA becomes the full <airline> tanty

A while ago I started a thread about "extra" benefits enjoyed by WP, WP1 and CL when flying QF and one of the funniest anecdote posted by RWJ777 on that thread was this one about a SG tantrum:

"As a WP, I was once offered a complimentary glass of sparkling wine in Y. The woman behind me, an American, saw this and barked that she was Gold and wanted it too (which was declined). Except when she pronounced Gold, it sounded like Cold; so her continued barking "I'm Gold, I'm Gold!", sounded like she was complaining she was cold. Such was her persistent hectoring of being Gold that I heard someone quip 'oh, for heaven's sake, give that woman a blanket!'. It was too much for her Australian boyfriend who told her to be quiet and sit still. The whole farce made for a very amusing trip, sparkling wine or not!"

re: When DYKWIA becomes the full <airline> tanty

Less than a minute later the woman was leaning over me, requesting I or my partner give up our 'paid for' seats to her! (We were 1A and 1B) . Errr, no! She rolled her eyes...hmmph!! Then proceded to ask other people in F the same. She had perhaps asked 4 or 5 people

Did Elite Tanter give you a reason why she was entitled to your seat?

Funnily enough, again recently, at the gate in Sydney a Singapore Airlines representative personally went around to all the families he could see in the boarding area to invite them to come forward and board. He was also vigilant enough to keep out other people without children who had just joined in the line.

Again, with the children, how many people is it reasonable to board along with the with children? I saw a party of 6 adults with 1 child all go forward to board when called in Singapore. They just shared holding the baby around so it seemed like they were all necessary.

No particular reason Quick. She just said it was cramped back there. And she was feeling claustrophobic. We both just shook our heads in disbelief at her. Perhaps if we had missed the beginning of the interaction, we might have shown an ounce of sympathy.

Back in 2009 I was flying AirNorth from Dili to Darwin and the guy in front me who had an accent unmistakeably LOTFAP and worked for the UN was having was having a meltdown about having to pay US$10.00 departure tax "I've never had to pay this before, I'm UN, how long has this been in rant rant rant." I was actually embarrassed to be a foreigner and it's not like the guy wouldn't have been able to claim it back on expenses.

The departure tax was always there but it was probably his first time flying on TL and the departure tax was only payable for pax travelling on RPT flights not the UN charter flight nor the PDL Toll ADF charters which he would've been on other times.

I'd seen a number of other UN DYKWIA moments back in 2001 when I worked over there and the sense of entitlement they had where even someone working at the airport dispaching the UN flights was on USD5,000.00 per month tax free compared to the average wage for a local which was USD120.00 per month.

A few months later the UN DH-7 went u/s prior to the DIL/DRW flight and as the ADF charter flight had a few seats left we were asked if we could take some of the pax. The pilots asked me who we should take which was a no brainer for me ie we took the Aspen Medical Doctor & Nurse and the remainder of UN pax got to stay behind. :p

I was privileged to see aquality 'tanty' last year.

Flying AA F domestic DFW-LAS. The flight was boarding and nearly completed. I noticed a middle aged woman, approach the CSM from Y asking for seating in F as she was an "Elite Member". (I missed the exact term she used, but she was making very clear her 'status')

Exactly at that moment, the Captain comes over the PA, announcing "as the flight is full, please take your seats quickly so we can depart on time" Along with other various suggestions about overhead lockers and the like.

The above mentioned middle aged woman, was very politley told by the CSM , the flight is full , as you have just heard, this time I'm unable to help you. Then she disappeared back to Y. Perhaps 2 minutes later, she returned, complaining " have you seen how cramped it is back there?" to the CSM. Again, the CSM apologised, stating there was nothing she could do as the flight was full.

I was thinking, that's the end of it. Less than a minute later the woman was leaning over me, requesting I or my partner give up our 'paid for' seats to her! (We were 1A and 1B) . Errr, no! She rolled her eyes...hmmph!! Then proceded to ask other people in F the same. She had perhaps asked 4 or 5 people, when the CSM reappeared, requesting her to take her seat immediately. The woman went ballistic! The DYKWIA speech was bordering on violent! The CSM, then calmly stated, "If you do not take your seat now, the police will be called and you will be removed from the flight"

She quickly resumed her seat. But, just as we were leaving the gate, again she re-appeared, aggressively approaching the CSM, asking for her details so she could lodge a formal complaint with AA. It was at this moment, the gentleman behind me, in 2A interjected with something along the lines of "sit the f... down, perhaps you should have paid for your bl...y F ticket" Believe me, it was much more colourful.

And with a smattering of applause, she disappeared back to Y. The man in 2A then gave his card to the CSM, saying "if she says anything, I will back you "

Was she expecting paid F pax to voluntarily downgrade themselves because she wanted a free upgrade?! It beggars belief that someone can reach elite status with an airline while having no concept of how it operates.

Au contraire, it is extremely easy. When you have airlines who are feeding the masses with an entitlement complex to go with, it is reflected in their pax to an nth degree.

Let's not forget there are plenty of elites in the USA who will complain bitterly why they were not upgraded, no matter the colour of their card. I don't think they usually get to a level of belligerence as described here, since many crews might just play the "call security and offload" trump card. Similar (though usually not on board, but at the service / gate counters) things seen with SQ PPS members.

Strewth. I must be fortunate never to have witnessed anything like this in LOFAP or Canada, in spite of countless journeys and a high expectation of AC elites to be upgraded from whY. Once heard a pom-accented gent say he should have been upgraded at a LHR departure, and one very tart remark heard from a whY pax on a VA domestic flight commenting on empty J seats HBA-MEL (of which I was occupying one). :)

I would dearly love someone from boca688's life to "display" in front of me. Such sport! Mumble "sure", stand up, shuffle around, collect things together, then sit down and press the FA call button for a Champagne.

I was standing in the F line boarding a A380 to SIN from MEL and anyway this well dressed older couple cut me off/pushed in front of me. Anyway I just let it slide no big deal. Got to the FA checking us in and she was told to go to the back of the line as she wasn't allowed priority boarding and the old dear says he isn't dressed properly to be allowed it either anyway I just gave the FA my boarding pass and kept going. The old couple was not happy at all.

Well JohnK I've been on the verge of a meltdown for some weeks now since you have been stuck at 116.25% for months now! :D

re a DYK.... tanty

I've written this story before but worth repeating because I couldn't believe it.

Some years ago (maybe 2) I was on QF93 MEL-LAX. I'd (luckily) upgraded to F a week out(thank YOU P1) and was in 1K (I'd been in 1A, but I'd been moved as the suite had a mechanical - note this is important).

So I am sitting there in a fairly full cabin (it tuns out a 2nd suite has gone tech too - not a great day for QF) with my pre-dept champ when this "lady" enters the cabin. I only noticed due to the ranting at the CSM and crew which went something like this "... It was a CONDITION of my UPGRADE that I have a window seat!" (yes, seriously!) and so the crew were saying well Sorry ma'am but you've been given the best seat we have unfortunately 2 of our window seats are inop and we can't use them. to which she just responded like a broken record that it was part of her upgrade she have a window (OMG I wanted to say if you really must have your window please give up your upgrade to someone else who'd appreciate it and go back to your J window upstairs.. but I just thought it). She went on and on. I zoned out a bit but she was still whining 10minutes later (no joke!) - hello it's 98% over water?!!! anyway finally a gentleman(more gentman than me) a few rows back finally got up and gave her his seat I think just to shut her the hell up. I have no idea who she was but she was painful and doing the whole DYK... meltdown.. over a freakin window on an UPGRADE?!! 95% of pax would be "that's fantastic I got this F seat for such a long flight.. I'll take anything!" but nope....

the thing is if she'd just quietly said to the CSM "oh a pity I was really hoping for a window" and CSM or the lady asked politely if I would mind swapping... I would have seriously considered it" but the way she carried on like a prize turnip... nope.

to their credit the cabin crew handled it as best they could with good grace. I would have lost my cough after the first minute of entitled bleating. This is why I am not in a customer facing position :D

What a b**ch! That guy shouldn't give up his seat for her, it's like giving prize for terror.

Would be awesome if that flight had 'shades down' policy (unfortunately QF don't do that).

Had a brief exchange with the "man in 2A" .

Turned out he worked for Wynn Casinos. Didn't delve too much, but quite high up the Las Vegas 'food chain" so to speak.

You are fortunate, or rather just say lucky. No one really wants to have to have one of these kinds of characters on board, irrespective of the "can't afford to look at a car crash" social syndrome.

Whilst it may be entertaining to see an undeserving git get their social dues, maybe reminding you in ways that a deity still exists to do a job, in many cases it's just a pure waste of time.

I haven't seen too many in my own experiences. But given that these kinds of forums are full of such topics that go on for pages and pages (makes for some nice reading sometimes whilst time passes in airport lounges, or over a drink), they can't exactly be isolated incidents. The most popular kind of story usually goes an idiot and a "victim" have an argument and the FA decides to upgrade the victim to "punish" the idiot.

With bated breath I awaiting the outcome of this short story ... did they pack up all their stuff and move? Did you "push back"? ;)

Well, this time no, as the CSM was about 1 seat away and saw the situation. She professionally took over telling the pax they should have informed the staff before changing seat even worse setting up camp. I would have looked a total goose if I then butted in, so I did move (and I felt it would have been an uncomfortable trip sitting next to a begrudging split couple). But I was certainly looked after for the rest of the trip......
