I am planning to book a trip from Melbourne to Tokyo (HND) on Qantas within the DSC promotion sometime this year. There will be 5 pax in economy sale and 1 pax in business making 550 SC. DSC making it 1100 SC. Assuming starting at Bronze, would I get the SC before the flight to benefit from gold tier frequent flyer during the trip?

Status Credits normally appear in your account shortly after landing. By my calcs you will be on 500 SCs after landing if you are starting on Zero and providing you are using the DSC promo. So, still another 200 to get before reaching SG (QF Gold)

Status credits for the other passengers will not pool into your account
And depending on J fare booked there is variation in the SC earn

MEL-HND Discount business is 120SCs (so 240SC during a DSC) one way. Flexible Business is 135 SCs (so 270SCs during a DSC) one way.

Even after completing the trip you will only have 480-540 SCs, and you need 700SCs to qualify as Gold, unless you have already taken other flights.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Welcome to posting. SCs reach your account generally just before you land (I've seen them appear when I turn off flight mode when taxiing at arrival) or within a few hours thereafter - but never before your flight. As mentioned the DSCs take longer, sometimes more than a week after your flight.

You only get the benefits after the necessary SCs and DSCs post and your status is upgraded - to silver (assuming as mentioned above you don't have a lot of other SCs, and also assuming you're the one in business). This mightn't happen until a week or more after you return to Melbourne.

It seems an occasional misconception I've come across that if someone books and/or pays for tickets they get the points and SCs, but also as already mentioned only the person actually flying gets them, and you can't transfer SCs.
