When a 'sale' is not a sale (Air Asia)

Email this morning from Air Asia - 'celebrate easter in Asia - 20% off'.

So I jump on line to look at Bali. Up until yesterday, fares were running at $499 MEL-DPS for flat-bed, and the return was $461.

Today with the '20% off' the fare is suddenly listed at $599 outbound and $651 return, to which they apply the 20% discount, coming to $495 and $537 respectively.

This 'sale' is actually costing more. Much more.

I wish I had taken screen-shots. The previous prices weren't indicated as being specials in any way - just the standard price. I expected those prices to be reduced further.

Economy fares similarly increased in price

In Australia that is called Deceptive pricing and its illegal unless they have been selling at the higher price for some time.

Also the wording implies "Base" fare only.

The screenshot shows how the booking page shows 20% off, but the maths doesn't add up to the untrained eye.
