What's your Uber experience?

I use Uber occasionally when I travel, if I haven't hired a car, but have never used Uber Eats. When travelling, I usually self-cater and stay at accommodation that allows for that, and we live in a rural area so there's no food delivery services of any kind out here.

In my situation, I use Uber 90% for work and 10% for personal travel. The loss of Uber rewards is unfortunate and the subscription service is not worth funding based on my own spending.

Ok did some more digging, Uber One subscription is just rebranded Uber Pass. As a diamond uber rewards member at end of July i was offered a free 6 month uber pass (1 Aug 22 to 31 Jan 23) if i linked any mastercard as a payment method on my uber and uber eats account. I did but hadnt used this.

Uber eats tells me my Uber Pass will become Uber One on 31 Jan - whats not clear is if i am getting 10% ride discount already or not.

Even though its 1 Sept, i earnt reward for my uber ride this morning which brought reward balance just over 750 so was able to claim a final lot of QF points (im guessing because was still 31 Aug in USA).

Wont be ubering again until Tuesday so will see what happens then.

Doubtful i will pay to continue once free trial ends, will likely just go BFOD and shortest wait across rideshare companies.

Uber usage ease of use please :)
I am landing at LAX early am on Sunday and going to Disneyland. No shuttles as there used to be. Apparently the most Common is using an uber.
Ok never used before. I will have data only once landed..
Will the app work lol . I have it all set up with PayPal etc

I was able to use Uber without any issues in India & Sri Lanka. Can't see why LAX would be any different, unless I'm missing something ...
re : payments - I still use my AU AMEX to pay for rides in India.

So as simple as booking it on the app ? No need for a local number ?

Nah, never had a number for India/SL when I was there .. worked fine .. as long as there is a network - wifi or mobile data, rides can be booked. Also, if needed to talk to driver, there is a free call option in Uber app that can be used ... I never personally used the free call option, but I'm sure it works via mobile data/wifi ..

You have reassured me, thank you

For the 3rd time in recent weeks, early morning flight booked a 5a pickup on the app. At 4:45a no one allocated.
It is becoming a pain. Its a $70 fare too.
Cancelled the booking and picked a new booking. Car that is 20 mins away.
I don't think it is worth pre-booking ATM
I never prebook - usually forget to - but this morning we were being quoted $68 for what’s usually $35-$40. I‘d already checked the Taxi fare to be ~$58. Gave up on Uber and by the time I booked on 13CABS the fixed fare was $51. Silver Service taxi arrived within 5 mins and offloaded at SYD T1 20 mins later. eReceipt already in my inbox.

I hadn’t used 13CABS since before Covid and first time using the prepay fare (rather than meter).

MIght be for next time.
I've seen massive surge pricing at the BNE international airport in the last few months. Like double the price.
Talking to a uber driver, he says it is used to get cars to the airport but resets after 5 mins.

The Placie app was quoting me $35-$45 on Ola and Didi - neither of which I’ve used. I thought one of them was dodgy but will investigate further. It’s nice to have options.

So I'm back to my usual uber usage pattern, what I have found is that because Uber Pass was replaced by Uber One, it isn't automatically applying my 10% uber pass discount per ride even though my pass is valid until January.

However, this must be really common issue (they did offer the free 6 month subscription to all Diamonds), as when you select the review your fare option in the app there is a dedicated link for Uber pass and the refund of the 10% comes through within 4 hours of reporting the issue.

It is a bit of a pain to have to actively claim the 10% back - so I just do the whole previous weeks worth on the first uber ride each week. Claim is always accepted no drama. and I'm advised that if i replace with Uber One in January i shouldn't have this issue.

If my usage pattern stays the same, Uber One will pay for itself before the first week of each month is over, based on rides only I dont use Uber eats.

Just been using Uber in Cairo - no problems. Works the same as here although I changed the card from my NAB Visa to my 28 Degree Mastercard, (no O/S fee)!! A 40 min ride might cost equivalent of $5 :); I tipped in cash. Cars not quite pristine, but usually clean and serviceable. One guy smoked (out the window). None had fluent English, most had basic and a few had none at all.

You've got to make yourself REALLY obvious on the curb, due to crazy traffic and roads sometimes 3 to 5 lanes wide (or rather, 3-5 cars wide; there may only be 2-3 actual lanes :)). If they overshoot, it usually a 10 min diversion to come back.

Sounds like any number of cities in China...

I've pretty much given up on Uber to/from Australian airports at popular times.

They're either unavailable (in smaller towns/cities) or overpriced, due to surge pricing.

I've recently had this issue in Cairns (3 times), Adelaide and Coffs Harbour.

So if a taxi is available and the fare sounds reasonable, I just go with that. Can't be bothered stuffing around with Uber atm.

Maybe not the right forum - but Big W has Uber gift cards with a 20x Everyday Rewards points bonus at the moment. Handy increase in points for your Uber trips if you convert your EDR points to Qantas.

Two Ubers from CBR in recent weeks. No problems getting rides and quick but both times I received calls from the driver immediately after booking telling me to go up to the departures drop off area. Refused the first time (had luggage that I wasn't going to schlep any further) but did so the second time and was still charged the:

Canberra Airport Pty. Ltd. Precinct Pickup Fee
A$3.00

This is garbage that has to stop and I won't be answering calls from numbers I don't recognise in the future. Dunno if I should bother reporting to Uber. Might be better to let the Airport know so they can do whatever.

Mind you they don't seem to care about where people stop to pick up pax. So many still pick up at the curb of the entry round-about, usually blocking traffic in the process, oblivious or too stupid to use the free pickup just 20m away.
