Friends

Recently, I had the occasion to call up QF to check something with my upcoming flights and the CSR mentioned something along the line of "...wow, you would be there for only a short time..."

The way I look at it, flight time is approx 9-10 hrs and on-ground time is about 48 hrs.

So, the "ratio" of on-ground / flight time would be about 2.4 (48 /(10+10)).

It does not look too bad to me but her reaction (presumably a non-AFFer) made me think how "short" your flight ratio has been.

So, did you (or are you going to) have any short INT turn-around flights ?

What's the "shortest" turn-around time you have had ?

I'm not talking about transit / stop-over here - but about going back to where you departed from.

Cheers

EDIT: please, DOM JASA is expressly excluded :D

I have done a QF21-QF22 turnaround before
- 14 hrs on the ground in Tokyo (same as the plane - the crew stay longer), both overnight flights

In that time:
three meetings
lunch
office tour
quick beer with a friend from Sydney working in Tokyo

I haven't had the "pleasure" of doing it myself, but day trips to Tokyo from Sydney have happened on occasion in my office. About 19.5 hours flying for about 13.5 hours on the ground.

I remember one trip several years ago went ADL-SYD-LAX-SFO-YVR-DEN-YEG-YYZ-LGA JFK-LAX-SYD-ADL in 14 days, home in ADL for 36 hours and back off to a wine show in Washington DC.
just so happened lost all luggage between LAX and DC, thanks AA, arrived in shorts and thongs in -2 snowing, feeling just dandy. got luggage back 2 months later.

But Wine Show was good :D

Last year, flew QF107 to LAX, spent the weekend there and then flew back to MEL on QF94. Arrived on Friday, departed on Sunday. Since I was actually coming from CBR from walking out the front door, to arriving at our condo (we drove down to Palm Springs, so add an extra couple of hours travel time) it was 24 hours of travel each way...

That said, the weekend was an absolute drunken blast and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Edit: Just did the sums, 48 hours of travel for 58 hours on the ground... So ratio comes to 1.2...

Not nearly as impressive as most of the others here, but I did go to CHC for a bucks party this year. Was on the ground for about 36 hours.

Shortest ever (domestic) was OOL, 3 hours.

People here (me included) have gone to domestic locations and not even gotten off the plane. Think MEL-PER-KTA return in a day. My BP got off the plane in KTA, but not me. :)

Hvr, my post did refer to (INT).

Yes, yours truly sometimes do walk out and walk back within the hour onto the same seat of the same plane.

But, please tell us your INT experience

And if possible, a quick calculation of the on-ground ratio [T (on-ground) / T (flight times)] would help to "rank" your experience.

This is so far the champ - with the lowest ratio of 0.7

On-ground 14 hrs
Flight times 20 hrs

I've done AKL for less than 12 hours before several times (just a day trip).

Also been to BGI for only a few minutes over 60 minutes too. The immigration agent thought I was insane when I answered her "how long are you staying here for sir?" with "oh around an hour, i'm getting back on the plane I just flew in on and going back to MIA". :)

Flight time to get to BGI was 13 hours in total (why fly direct....) and around an hour on the ground. Makes my ratio around 0.08 ;)
If you include the airport stopovers, add another 7 hours to that too. Gotta hate those red eyes!

Have also done the same in RAR.

Did also do MEL-LAX-JFK (14 hours in JFK) then JFK-LHR with around 18 hours in LHR before heading to DFW via ORD (where I was only a few hours before I left for SEA). That's what a MegaDo will do ;)

My quickest INT was when I did TPE-HKG-MNL return. Was in MNL AP for 5-6 hours. Didn't even leave the airport.

Posted this before. When I was in investment banker, (well over 10 years ago now!) and before electronic signatures were accepted widely, (and when faxed copies weren't good enough) I and others occasionally were tapped on the shoulder to hand deliver 'deal closing' documents by hand to head office (New York) or sometimes London and to bring the counter-signed document back.

SYD-LAX-JFK (I forget what it was then, but 20 hours?)

Taxi into office, deliver document, have shower, await counter-sig, sign for and collect doc, taxi to airport maybe 4 to 6 hours.

JFK-LAX-SYD (20 hours)

Definitely HLO!

ps I should add that while it was exciting to blast off for a trip like that, it was a bit deflating when you realized that you were considered unimportant enough to be allowed to be away from the wheeling / dealing for a couple of days!

I think you had knocked moa999 off the podium :D

Did a (couple of) 24 turnaround hour for lunch in AKL last year, ( a few guilty parties on this site too as I recall)

Earlier this year I flew MEL-CHC,CHC-xSYD-LAX,LAX-SJC-LAX,LAX-xSYD,SYD-MEL

Scheduled time between SYD-LAX arrival and LAX-SYD Departure was 11:40 (10:30 to 22:10). That's 28:50 in flight.

A few years ago, I flew BOS-xDFW-xSFO-xLAX-HNL & HNL-xLAX-xORD-BOS. That was 26:50 scheduled airtime. It was the same inbound aircraft as outbound at HNL with a 1:10 minute turnaround. (All in First Class - I earned 810 SC's).

I've done a few of these.

Last week did AKL-OOL-AKL, with 1hr on the ground at OOL. Last month did AKL-NLK-AKL with 1hr on the ground at NLK.

Further afield, have done MIA-AUA-MIA, with a very quick overnight (same plane in/out). Also done AKL-LAX-AKL on the same plane, with about 10hrs at LAX.

Last year did three trips around the US similar to serfty's final one above, where the amount of time on the ground was minimal but spending (effectively) two days in the air.

.... Also done AKL-LAX-AKL on the same plane, with about 10hrs at LAX....

I think I will stop "calculating" by now

This is exhausting - the trips, that is.

Ratio of 0.38

Flight time 26 hrs
On Ground 10 hrs

A new champ !

BTW, when I thought of this thread, I originally did not think of SC run but more along the lines of work, travel and/or family etc....

We all know (AFFers anyway) that a run is almost always crazy.

Although the point of this was to requal (so effectively a SC run), the 10hrs in LA were used very productively as a lengthy shopping trip (I actually took an empty suitcase over there and it was completely filled will all manner of Christmas and birthday presents, as well as many clothes for all my family).

Earlier this year I flew MEL-CHC,CHC-xSYD-LAX,LAX-SJC-LAX,LAX-xSYD,SYD-MEL

A bit off topic

That SFO leg was clever. Most would have DFW LAX only.

Not sure how Serfty got the SFO inserted in there
