What's your prediction on the Australian Dollar?

Prediction that NZD will head for parity with AUD in six months. It last did in November 1972.

Try not to buy it under 0.90 at the moment as it has a recent trading range between 0.87 and 0.91.

As previously stated my conviction on AUD/USD remains 77/80c, Goldman Sachs this week agrees too. The China bubble dominates AUD domestic influnces are blips.

I hope for a weaker aud to help attract overseas visitors and also increase domestic tourism market.

li don't know how that's gonna happen when it is cheaper to fly to Bali from Australia than it is to fly transcontinental. getting to Broome? sometimes it is cheaper to fly business class overseas then economy domestic :(

For that to happen domestic flights need to get even cheaper and I am not referring to LCCs either and hotel prices will need to be halved at minimum. And that is just a starting point.

It is just too expensive to holiday in Australia.

AUD at 60c goes a long way towards achieving it.

The other things that need to happen will be equally painful.

Amen to that - can hardly recall the last domestic holiday we had. Heading OS to enjoy 5* hotels/resorts is cheaper coupled with better facilities and service.

AUD at 60c is totally wrong. It can only assist greedy exporters and the rest to suffer.

Oh and it is not going to fix domestic tourism. Sure it may force some to holiday domestically but I cannot get motivated to spend $150/night on a dump that does not include overpriced breakfast.

You forgot to mention the obligatory $30+ for pathetic internet.

I'd love to see it drop significantly for a short period of time. I am going to have a significant amount of US$ to convert to A$ sometime in the next 3 months and every % lower for the A$ is a % more A$ I will get for the exchange. It can go back up again after I have completed the transaction, of course

Agreed. Comparing 5-star holidays in Australia to Asia especially is no contest. More modern facilities, better food, and service staff who don't think themselves too good to serve you. Like you say, Australian tourism suffers from indifferent service, old facilities in desperate need of renovation/investment, and being massively overpriced. I don't understand why anyone would holiday in Australia.

can you hold off?

I don't know how long you will be waiting but the interest rate differential seems to be keeping the Australian dollar reasonably steady so we are buying in the low nineties just in case the doomsayers are correct.

We can all but wish that was the case Johnk. I'm working at it
