What's your carry-on?

I like to travel with one bag wherever possible, but the old backpack isn't cutting it right now.

So I want to know what carry-on luggage AFFers use - and what features make it a part of your kit.

My rig:

For day trips, I'm carrying a Mandarina Duck MINI laptop briefcase. It's simple, light, and looks good enough to bring into a meeting.

For longer trips, I'm carrying a coughpy old Black Wolf backpack with a laptop pocket that I want to replace. It's bulky when packed, uncomfortable to carry, and the laptop is always difficult to get out of the overhead bins or at security.

Look into STM Bags and Crumpler if you're considering keeping the backpack look and feel but want something more suited to the task.

I usually use an STM Revolution, and I know quite a few who swear by that bag. Very easy to get a laptop out of with it's dedicated laptop pocket that's not only padded, but hidden.

I have been using a Tumi Alpha rollaboard for years for my domestic and international trips. For international I have in the past supplemented it with either a Tumi duffel bag or a Tumi Trifold Suit Bag.

I recently moved to a Red Oxx Air Boss which has so far only been used domestically. Although I am finding the bag lighter than the Tumi Rollaboard - it feels heavier as it is carrier rather than dragged.

For International: a (relatively) cheap Antler roller and a standard issue Dell computer bag. I have recently bought a Victorianox suit bag which I'm yet to try out.
For Domestic: daytrips usually just the computer bag, but upto a week i'd use the same rollon and computer bag combo.

well, for Virgin Australia domestic and international short-haul flights, max linear dimension is 105cm (i.e. less than QF's 115 and considerably less than the bag you were considering). And VA long-haul international limit is 115 (same as QF).

My carry on bag is a Mandarina Duck 42L Drop bag (Mandarina Duck B Drop trolley case for Sale) that I lovingly refer to as my vacuum cleaner. I've had it for quite a few years now and it's suitable for a trip lasting up to about 4 nights.

For overnight trips however I often just take my Samsonite laptop backpack (Samsonite Pro DLX 3 Laptop Backpack). It has enough room for my laptop (15" Retina Macbook Pro), ipad, Kindle, change of clothes and toiletries. I also take this bag to work with me, as it has enough room to put my gym clothes and shoes in.

For International Carryon I have an Antler Air Aeon, but its just a bit too big for Domestic, so I have invested in an Eastpack Transfer 42L.

103cm in total dimension and weighs 2.4KG.

My last trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou I used a Black Wolf Inertia, as I knew for carry-on it would be fine and the option of using it as a backpack or a roller would suit my needs.

It did admirably. I wouldn't use it for climbing Everest or conquering the Amazon, but for airport and regular travel use, it's good.

One day I might jump on the designer luggage bandwagon.

For now it is a $25 Srixon carry bag with shoulder strap that cost me nothing and have had it for 6-7 years. It has been commuting with me almost every week to BNE for ~5 years and all my overseas trips.

Still going strong.
