What's up with Emirates?

I left Emirates 3 years ago. Don't worry about Business, The food in First is often tasteless or inedible, if you are lucky, up there with Economy. The rubber breakfast eggs are something to remember, but not in a good way.
The service. No staff in First class overnight. I had to dump all the dishes on the floor outside the the suite so I could go to sleep where they remained for several hours You are wasting your time complaining to Emirates as they couldn't give a stuff. 16 communications over 5 months to get the correct FF points. Out of 8 flights, only once was the allocated seat working and in one case no alternative seat was available. Only totally inoperative one.

Try Etihad as their planes especially 380 apartments leave Emirates for dead and Business is far better on both 777 & 380. On the 14 first flights I have taken the food far better and is the on plane service, usually. Check in is poor and lounges range from wonderful (Sydney, outstanding restaurant and greeted by name immediately on entry each time)to shocking (Frankfurt, JFK, SFO filthy no food worth eating and Aldi quality wine iff any). Take care where you fly. Complaints are responded to slowly, points errors fixed quickly but everything else you just receive a meaningless letter. Ignore check in experience, check the lounge at departure points and on nearly all flights you will have a good to great experience. Avoid 777's operated by Jet Connect on long flights as the planes are only superficially similar.

Using my few remaining EK points in early September for a 2 week NZ holiday, flying the 380 MEL-AKL-MEL in J as I have progressively come down from Gold to Silver to nothing. Used them for convenience when I had a project in GLA and the one-stop via DXB made sense - especially missing LHR. I agree with those who say there is a whole lot of difference between their 380 and 777 hard product. After the discussion above, will be interested to see if their on-board service and catering have dropped. It is hard to disregard the airline though as they have such a comprehensive network that it is often the easiest way from A to D, without having to go via B and C - or only via DXB!

Used few times Emirates from Singapore to Colombo on business class and services and food was excellent. In one instance it was a brand new plane and we are the first one to fly. Other is french wine, which has lots of exotic names to pick. Once I landed at Colombo I was so drunk....lol.

A couple of items.
The F lounge in DXB Concourse C (T1) is tragic. Tired, seats falling apart. Things might look up when concourse D opens later this year, not sure if the EK F lounge in T1 is part of the refurb either.

And as for QF points, have never ever had them awarded automatically, however I make the booking, and always had to request them. This must be a PITA for the QFF people.

I did once get greeted as a CL  even though I'm not.

Cheers skip

Interesting. Your experiences have been completely different to ours. We've done some 14+ segments on EK in F and J to various European destinations, and 12 Australia to USA via DXB, and a few to NZ. All have been very good. Food and particularly wines in F have been good. Some variation, yes. Some not so good, yes. But some very very good. Overall better than other airlines. Worst breakfast eggs ever was QF F LHR to Australia and BA F food is very wanting. EK has caviar and DOM in F.

EK lounges in Italy, London and BNE are some of the best we've ever been to. QF lounge in BNE is very old and tired. EK lounge is excellent with good food and wines (unlike QF who basically have nothing but snacks and the occasional stew) F and J lounges in Dubai are excellent. Dubai airport with airport hotel and good lounges with direct boarding from lounges makes it one of our preferred hubs, much better IMHO than LHR or AMS for example. Direct connections mean one stop to any European or USA or Canada destination. Limo transport included, unlike BA on F where there's nothing and QF to USA also have dropped limo. We're flying to GLA in September and limo service has radius of 150 miles, enough to comfortably get us to Edinburgh.

F on EK, once you overcome the bling, we find very good. Cabin staff leave you alone to enjoy flight and don't keep thumping their way up the aisles as they do on other airlines. Eat when and how much you want up to 30 mins before landing, excellent front bathrooms on 380 make it feel like a proper F flight.

Service has always been efficient. Yes, as I said they leave you alone during flight but press the call button and the longest wait we've ever had was 21 seconds. Normally 10.

QF/EK alliance means we can fly on EK metal to many more destinations with one stop direct and earn QF SC and points.

And I write this as a QF WP, and now EK WP.

YMMV.

I tried Emirates only once (BNE - DBX - BNE) and found it the most uncomfortable I had experienced for a long while. Admittedly, we were in Y but the seats were uncomfortably hard and the meal service was pretty much a run down the aisles flinging the trays - maybe it was a competition to see who could get back to the 'chatting' area first! After the 'service' it was impossible to find a crew member.
Never again - Singapore Airlines stays my airline of choice.

Three flights with Emirates over the past 2 years. Y from BKK to SYD. Very crammed, flight attendants quite aggressive and in a rush. Not a good experience. Flight from DXB to ADL in J in April this year. Really enjoyed it; great service and food. The angle flat bed was better than I expected. Last week DXB to ADL in F. Couldn't fault any aspect of the service and enjoyed the food.

Flown with Emirates 7 times now. Only one poor flight - Syd - BKK. We have been upgraded 3 out of those times. I am fine flying with them.

This is a very interesting thread. One has some poor flights on every airline at times.

But most of the negativity for EK is from people with low AFF posting counts. Am I being too suspicious and negative also?

Not in our experience. They post automatically in a day or two.

YMMV.

Absolutely. Fly enough and one will have great and poor flight on every airline. Based on all the accounts I've seen about EK, they range from fantastic to awful. I suggest that with their meteoritic rise as a global carrier means that maintaining standards is incredibly difficult, hence inconsistency in service is rife. They also suffer from severe inconsistency in hard product (F aside). Their 777s and A380s are far apart in comfort in J and Y.

But I haven't flown them in all cabins or enough to form a judgement other than I don't have much interest in flying long haul in Y on one of their 777s

We flew Emirates DXB to Milan on a 777 in Y.
It was a very full flight, cramped seeting, not much leg room and food was inedible. The FA we very uninterested.
We flew Prague to DBX, service not as bad as previous flight but same cramped plane.

We were really disappointed and expected more.

Aren't all long haul whY flights wanting these days? When we first started to do long haul in the 70's, whY was acceptable, often with only 50% loads, but it's got a lot worse these days and all airlines have become too greedy and reduced comfort and sanity in whY.

Same here. We just did a BNE-DXB-CDG QF code share flight. We noticed within a 2 days of being in Paris, our QF account indicated the points and SC. Thinking back over the 40 years I have flown with QF, only ever chased up one set of missing points. Have almost a million points to use right now, and would not hesitate in flying EK.

Of course, it's whY after all, but some are far better than others. And the EK 777s are not near the top of the list.

Don't forget to complain via email if something was broken or very poor - like my seat and entertainment system was two years back. I got an extra 10,000 miles credited to my account.

How many of your flights were on 777 product than A380? And none was in Y?

Also EK WP - I fly often in Y - and I understand well what people say when they experience their 777 product in Y, especially when they get a full flight - which they all are these days than they use to be - even an 80% load was more bearable than the current 95% plus - and then the crew seem to be either over tasked with the full flights or showing inexperience than they once did.

EK has always been hit and miss with crew, and more recently in Y, it is more miss than hit.

I just have come off a big mission of Flights - all booked EK Y:
QF 51 - BNE-SIN - A330
EK349 - SIN-CMB - B777
EK651 - CMB-DXB - B777
EK302 - DXB-PVG - A380 - op up to J
EK305 - PVG-DXB - B777
EK652 - DXB-MLE-CMB - B777
EK348 - CMB-SIN - B777
EK432 - SIN-BNE - B777 - op up to J

All of my flights were full with the exception of QF51 and spare seat were sparse, which made for a lot of interesting observations of unhappy PAX in packed situations. While full flights are bearable on the A380, on the EK B777 it is always a recipe for some entertainment in Y.

While I was well aware of what I was signing up for, and my flights were planned with hotel transits overnight along the way, having it take 4 days in each direction, I again understand well complaints from someone on say EK433 BNE-SIN-DXB should they encounter this flight at 100% capacity in Y.

And then their is the hard product, IFE etc. If one was doing the A380 options to DXB and beyond into Europe, it is no where as bad as the hard product on some of the not so direct routes via SIN on the B777 fleet. For most, they have come accustom to EK having USB ports to charge your phones etc in all seats in all classes - however on my latest trip, all my SIN-DXB flights other than EK348 were very old frames and had zero USB ports and that saw a few unhappy people with almost flat phones who were expecting them. The IFE on all of them were the very old 10" screens and very poor quality to watch anything on.

I still like EK and what they offer and deliver to me - I just have noticed a significant reduction in the overall experience this year than last year - or any years before that. And I put it down to higher yields on flights and the strain that puts on the staff and especially the newer staff - and that a full EK B777 is just asking for sparks to fly.

On my last segment of flights, on QF51 I was welcomed for the first time ever on any QF51 flight while EKWP and doing the code share flight, and was looked after well for the first time ever - which was a change and enjoyed, however it was not until EK302 that EK staff said boo to me, on the return didn't get any recognition on EK305 - on EK652 was first one to board, and when I got to my seat the staff member saw me and said "so you must be Mr. xx_X" which threw me off because had never had that before, and was spoiled rotten the whole flight, a hi at the end of EK348 and sorry just have been too busy on the flight, and nothing extra or any introduction on EK432.

Also the mess on 5th Freedom flights that don't disembark like EK652 & EK348 was interesting to watch. Simply people were moved seats so many times while on board because multiple people were assigned the same seat and/or families spread all over the few spare seats left, had crew running around asking to shuffle people around seats to accommodate them. EK652 was more of an eyesight for me, as we had a lot of shuffling going on in DXB where frankly their shouldn't have been any and boarding passes issued properly from the outset of the flight. It added frustration on the crew with many people taxing them - on EK652 crew dumped a UM in the empty seat next to me and he was next to me for a good 20 minutes until she came back to re-seat him (another shuffle) because of course UM's cannot sit next to men. Let the kid play games on my Ipad because ICE wasn't switched on and he was a little pissed he got taken away from the ipad and all the games on it. In total out of DXB on EK652, I had three different people seated next to me in the shuffle prior to take off, one being a UM.

But again, I can only come back to the issue is their systems, crew, and B777 cannot handle 95% plus yield flights without the service standard slipping, which has a significant impact in Y.

Hi all, of late I've been really disappointed with EK, my last 4 flights I've had 2 stone cold inedible meals in J, a busted seat in F and staff that are pretty ordinary. The flights last month left me unimpressed as well.

Their 777 J product is really substandard these days and everything just seems so tired on these aircraft. Given so many destinations use these aircraft it's becoming a bit of an avoid type situation.

The flight yesterday in J had an unheated cold meal (chicken) and after it was taken away nothing ever came back! When I asked about it some 10 minutes later I was told that the ovens were off and that was that. I asked to see the purser who never showed up. Pretty poor really.

I also had a chuckle last month the purser had her iPad and basically read my name right off it on her welcome walk around, i mean, why bother at all?

Needless to say I get the feeling they are a bit stale.

Love to hear everyone else's thoughts of late.

I had a bad experience with Emirates three years ago when I had a broken hand. The seats were so tight that everytime the person in front lent back their seat, they were actually sitting in my lap. The air hostess just refused to help. I asked for help with the luggage and while waiting at Dubai airport, they forgot all about me and nearly missed my plane.

Last year I used Emirates again, and coming back from Malta to Dubai, we were all squashed in like sardines. We were a group of eight and our seats were dispersed all over the plane , instead of keeping us together as booked. The hostess could not be bothered. I suppose depends on who you find on the day.
