What to expect- QF Domestic Business Class?

I'm really sorry if this has been covered somewhere else but I've had a look and can't even find the answer in trip reports.

I have my very first J experience on Sunday morning (yes, I will also post my first trip report ;) ) and have read in many threads about the meals but my flight (at 9:15 BNE-SYD (QF513)) is showing as a refreshment flight. What exactly can I expect from a refreshment in Business?

Also, I know there are pre-takeoff drinks but would I get champagne on this flight? Oh please.................. ;)

If I have picked a poor choice of flight for J class (picked because 763 and I usually fly 73x's in Y), should I change this to a Breakfast flight?

Thanks,
littl_flier

You shouldn't expect great things from domestic business I'm sorry.

The pre-takeoff drink these days is either water or juice.
The food will probably be something like pancakes (which are usually nearly cold) or a fruit salad.

They will take your jacket from you and offer you a newspaper though :)

I frequently fly in J between SYD and BNE and while you will only be offered either juice or water on the ground you can certainly ask for champagne in the air. In fact the guy behind me in 2A did exactly that on QF520 on Thursday morning.

Also while it might seem not as good as "breakfast", "lunch" or "dinner" the "refreshment" listed along with the flight information seems more about watering down the expectations of Y class pax. While the folks in Y will get a sandwhich or crackers with dip you might be offered a fetta tart or veal pie and IMO these are often more interesting than the "main" meals.

So while it's not really anything like international J, IMHO it is still a pretty nice way to fly.

The "snack" on my 9:50am departure BNE-MEL last week was a choice of a hot omelet or a salad. The omelet would have been acceptable as breakfast. I would expect similar for a 9:30am departure to SYD.

All I can say is that domestic business class is not worth the money they charge you.

I am always appalled at how much Q charges my employer to fly me business class in comparison to the level of service they give you.

Sorry but being offered an warm orange juice or water (equally as warm) as a greeting is not what i call business class service.

But anyway....enjoy your experience

From personal experience flying J Per-Syd is worth the money

Free drinks throughout, great dinner service etc

Some pax dont fly business class for the service or the free drinks, I fly it for the bigger seat and legroom. I dont drink alcohol on flights, with softdrink and water free in Y so the free drinks in J is of no concern to me either.

I think litl_flier really did

Firstly, welcome to AFF Josko. (Edit): I hope it doesn't sound like I'm being harsh, just quite envious that you always get to fly J Class. ;)

Thanks simongr for giving my TR a plug. :p As I mentioned in my TR, the food was really nice, much better than the dry cookie and coffee in a paper cup I usually receive.

In response josko as I mention at the bottom of the TR, despite the benefits that I enjoyed, for a 1.5hr sector I would'nt pay the full price to fly on this route out of my own pocket. However, we do have a corporate policy to fly full Y class, and I will happily pay the $260 difference out of my own pocket again to fly in J return (it's even cheaper if I can find a D fare or don't book 36 hours out from departure). Its my little chance for some luxury and is the only route domestically where the difference betweeen the full Y fare and J fare is reasonable. Of course, the Status credits and Points are a bonus. ;)

Thanks for the response though. :) I know it can be quite exxy for Business class, particularly J class, but I notice you haven't told you're employer to stop flying you in J. ;) Lap it up, its better than slogging the rest of us in whY. ;)

josko,

If it's really that bad then don't do it, just tell your employer that they (or you) are wasting their money and that you'd prefer economy class :!:

Not sure about your warm drinks as I've never had that problem. As others have said the drinks and greeting are only a very minor part of the experience. The space and the comfortable seat are the real sellers for me. (.. and my employer doesn't pay for domestic J )

My employer only flys me whY, so the odd occasion that I get an op-up to J, or an ODU using points, for my domestic flights I have always enjoyed the extra room, better seat, and slightly better quality of food and service. Is J class warranted for short flights? Probably not but I still enjoy the odd experience up nearer the front of the plane.

Now if only those pesky whY passengers would stop using the J toilet.... oops, wrong forum ;):p

hahaha...and putting baggage in my J bin... oops.. It's contagious...

I would never pay for domestic J but ODU's are a very easy use of points.. None of this looking for seats months out.. Unless you pick the prime time flights you can almost always get an ODU. IMHO, after working all day and heading home at night, J is great.. And sectors like SYD-ADL, DRW-ADL and SYD-PER are always worth it.. It's not the same as international J but it's still worth burning points for that extra comfort, space, food and wine...

And what do we think the chances are of getting an ODU (for 2!) SYD-PER on QF571, which is the 737-800 flight out at 1750?

My guess, seeing as there are only 12 J seats, is Scottish Football Association.

Dubno

You haven't mentioned which day your are travelling but on a Tuesday night you will have better chance than Friday. Check out seatcounter.com and enter your details. Here, you can tell how many seats are available in J now and then check just before you fly. The other option is to upgrade online using your FF points. I'm pretty sure its the same points upgrading online as it is in the QP, and you're guaranteed a seat. :p

There is only one thing guaranteed on Qantas (actually and airline) and that is there is NO guarantees. There is no guarantee you will get your requested seat, no guarantee you will be in the class you paid for (with $ or FFP's), and no guarantee you will be on the flight you were booked and confirmed for.

However dubno, would have more chance if they put there request for upgrade in now, rather than waiting to request an ODU.

The points requirement is the same. If it doesn't work online just keep checking. Then if it still doesn't come through ask at the QP for an ODU. You just never know :!:

Hi, I fly business all the time and find it quite Ok domestically and great internationally. Shame some do not get the level of service I experience

Thanks littl_flier,

We're flying on a Thurs (13th Sep). Requesting everyday online with no luck so far...Returning on 1st Oct on a 743 so holding out more hope for that one.

Cheers.

Ok, well the flight out is J8 which explains why you aren't getting upgrades yet. I guess QF want to try and fill it first with paying passengers. Keep trying regularly and you never know your luck. :p

As for the trip home, I think you've definitely got a better chance than the way out. All still J9's. ;)
