Don't really want to learn Apple so am restricting myself to Android.

Must have lots of storage, at least 128GB even if it is expanded by micro SD card.

Size-10"-12"

An assuming Wi-Fi is universal.

Headphone jack and preferably a USB port.

Ability to read e-Books would be viewed favourably.

Durable, it'll be in HLO and used on the plane so there'll be a couple of knocks.

$500? Prepared to pay more for a good one.

Not really sure what they cost and will claim the tax back when I go OS in Feb.

Also want to view photos. videos and play music.

i would recommend getting a kobo glo or kindle paperwhite as an ebook reader. they are light, build in back light makes reading on a dark plane easy without eye fatigue.

They are light enough to hold for hours, easy to carry to the beach / pool.

depending on your uses for the tablet, but if mostly to watch video and a bit of browsing then a smaller ~8" would be a better option imho.

once you get beyond 8" the weight starts to become an issue in terms of holding them. they also take up more space.

the samsung Tab S2 is a reasonable tablet you can sometimes pick up < $500 on sale. Has mSD slot for expanded storage.

I'd recommend popping into a jb hifi and trying out some of the tablets on display to get an idea of how heavy they are.

I would have a look at the Sony Z2 tablet, a little bit more expensive but a great tablet. They are also dust and waterproof.

I have got a Samsung Tab S2 9.7 and am happy with it. We added a 64G Ultra SD card to it, so now have 96G of storage. As regards the size 8" or 9.7", we have been happy with the larger screen. But it can be "heavy" if you use it a lot when not comfortably seated.

Transformer 3 Pro is out in May..... Looks a contender for..... VAIO z canvas.....Microsoft pro book....

Edit: Already out (stupid you tuber) terrible battery so cross it off list!

I have a Sony Z4. Has everything you mentioned I think. Mine runs reliably, the screen is quite good d holds it's charge for a decent amount of time. I don't find it heavy. Combined with Google play and YouTube red there are plenty of reading and viewing options. It's ok for light work on the plane. Not sure about the price

I purchased the Samsung Tab S2 9.7 with 64GB hard drive and inserted the 64GB micro SD card I purchased last year from Aldi.

GoodGuys had the best price, $647 so I asked JB HiFi if they would price match. Of course said the sales person, we own them! So all good and now learning its features.

My SO has the Samsung and is very happy with it. She did have some trouble with the fingerprint reader but the phone support was very good and resolved the issue. The different screen format seems to be excellent for online shopping :)

Also, be wary of aldi memory cards, I've only had 1 fail over the years and it was one from there. Of course ymmv. I lost over 800 photos, yes I know I should have transferred them across to my laptop earlier. :)
