What routes should QF fly?

I could never understand why QF stopped JNB - PER flights on their own rights, given the huge number of South Africans visiting / migrating to Perth. They used to do HRE - PER - SYD back in the 1990's with their 744's, so I can see no reason why JNB - PER - SYD or JNB - PER - MEL couldn't be operated (VA's failure with MEL was the 777's longer flying time after all).

Qantas' 744 Would be far better than 9 hours in SAA 343 in Y with no AVOD that's for sure!

What other routes would you like to see QF flying?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

All but 2 of the 343's have AVOD in the back of the bus. It is the smaller 342's you are thinking of that have mainscreen at the back.

SYD/MEL-OOL
SYD-SFO
SYD-YVR
MEL-DRW
MEL-BKK
SYD-TVL

(just pulling these out of thin air)

SYD - JFK (with a 789)
SYD - (somewhere in Turkey or Egypt)
SYD - PEK
SYD - DXB
SYD - BOM/DEL

The above from MEL

Just in case Red Roo reads this thread:
WGA-BNE please :)

Probably because the South Africans first choice is to fly their own carrier. Now if it were a lot of Aussie living in or visiting SA, then their may have been sufficient demand for QF to operate the route.

Don't QF code share on this route anyway? That effectively gives them monopoly on the route allowing for indirect price fixing.

I do agree that there is very little return traffic to SA, mostly coming out here. Every South African I know, including my partner is afraid to return. That would make the route very unprofitable.

Codeshare agreements vary greatly. Some are based on a fixed number of seats for each coded airline, some base purely a cost/revenue sharing. some have flexibility with numbers of seats. Not knowing the details of the QF/SA agreement I am in no position to speculate regarding monopoly, price fixing, or profitability.

Would you not have corporate travel on that route aswell?

As to the OP, PER-KUL would be my biggest wish, but know the chances of that are next to nil

ABX-MEL would be great to give Rex some competition, would be great to have one of the new Q400's on the route too.
Cheers

*bing* ... of course, that's one for me too.

WGA-MEL please! Give Rex some competition there too.

From WGA we can currently fly:

  • QF: WGA-SYD
  • Rex: WGA-SYD (mirroring QF timetable) and WGA-MEL (but only twice a day)
QF to MEL would be fantastic.

SYD-OOL is the main QF route I miss (or want). It's the one port where I have many projects that QF no longer fly.

SYD-DXB/AMM would also be nice...

CFS-MEL: VA currently fly this route on weekends only but the schedule really only works for those from Mel heading north, not the other way around.

I and others have never understood why QF pulled out of the CNS/HKG run all that time ago, CX are loving it with daily flights CNS/HKG with near full out and full on returns, half the week they are direct the other via BNE.

I fly this route once or twice a year and find the CX J fares very expensive and those coffin seats are awful, apparently not being replaced on these sectors (only SYD/HKG).

Was told QF flew Cairns to USA years ago, how easy would that be for travellers, visit southern cities then holiday in the tropics on way home, plus Cairns could export some excellent tropical & seafood products to USA too.

No doubt in my mind Q are missing out on good business.

Now that MH has become a OW member, I hope to see a KUL service. KUL has a history of terrible yields for QF and BA, but I think that's mainly to do with predatory pricing by MH in the past and Malaysian government protectionism, which dragged yields down and led to QF, BA and the like pulling out of KUL in the early 2000s.

And recent natural disaster events aside, I've never understood why QF struggles with NRT.

Also with their PVG hub aspirations, hopefully we'll see a MEL-PVG at some stage.

Somehow I think their long haul equipment (or lack thereof) is an issue.

What about JFK - LHR and complete the RTW route!

NZ has this, I wonder if its profitable to have a complete RTW option?

Or at least maybe a codeshare?

I've always wondered why lax-lhr wasn't an option on qf. Would they have rights to carry between the two or only onward from aus?

Also, istr a 743 (not 744) to HRE in late 90s. Was the 744 used to jnb or was it the 743 until it finished? Or 742 for that matter. The did operate 707s at one stage, but presumably with a refuelling stop?

I'd like to see cdg as their next eu city, with a red not orange tail.

Most people who flies HKG-CNS are Chinese tour groups and most would prefer to fly CX over QF because of local language/meals, and superior AVOD. Also CX/QF are OW anyway so they probably have done deals on this. There would be hardly anyone from CNS flying to HKG regularly.

I'd recon only about half are from Asia, on out bound lots of Aussies, every time I go to HKG I see many CNS R/E agents (going over to sell local properties I'm told).

The thing that bugs me is the price of CX in J, CNS/HKG/CNS can be as high a $7K+ for a whole 7 hour flight, ridiculous, but a CX J CNS/HKG/BKK/HKG/CNS and its about $5K!! and a hell of a lot longer flying time (just did this with stopovers).

There is some talk about another Asian Airline interested in this sector, wont help me as I'm a QFF.
