What people do to try to get a hotel upgrade

I was once upgraded at a hotel in Singapore a few years ago. It was December and there were problems with flights to Europe due to bad winter weather at the European end. There were passengers from Australia who made it as far as Singapore, couldn't continue and were filling up Singapore hotels.

The standard hotel room I had booked was no longer available so the hotel upgraded me to the executive floor. I'm not sure if the actual room was any better but I did appreciate access to the executive lounge which offered free drinks and canapes every day during happy hour!

I'd book the suite room if I wanted a bigger room.

Usually don't care too much about booking suites but suite room was cheaper than the deluxe room for 2 nights last week so did that and moved to Deluxe room after 2 nights.

The annoyance is exacerbated when you come across English language movies or shows which have been dubbed over in Italian, Spanish etc.

This can actually be quite funny for shows/ movies that you can quote verbatim, & can tell what's going on by mere body language alone.
Not to mention, you can increase your reciting skills by adding another language to the mix.

My mother's chiding of "why can't you remember your times tables as well as you can remember Simpson's quotes" stil continues to this day!

Having worked on a hotel check in desk many moons ago, my technique is to always be smiley and cheerful, say a friendly hello to the attendant and ask how their day's going, and cheerfully chatter about how excited me and Mr Glider are to be in xx city for the first time... and did they have any rooms with a nice view available?

Works sometimes, and you can never go wrong with being nice to people with the power to help you.

Worked spectacularly in Vegas, went from the AAA cheapest room at Aria to a $1000p/n suite.
