If you move to Australia, what are the messaging apps aussies would expect from you? iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc. any other I forgot about?
Also if there's any difference between friends and work.
That can severely make an impact in what brand of phone you buy mind you.

You've already listed the main ones I use.

FWIW, the only reason I use WhatsApp is to talk to non-Australian friends. Most of my Aussie friends don't use it.

We use WhatsApp for work and for mums group. Viber for international (eg family) and Facebook messenger for everyone else.

With the privacy issues of WhatsApp, a number of my friends including myself have moved to Signal. I also have Telegram as well. But I still have WhatsApp because some of my other friends have not yet moved over.

You might already be aware of it, but Telegram probably has worse privacy than WhatsApp.

Why would that be?

By default, Telegram doesn't use end to end encryption. By default it's a cloud messaging platform with all chats stores in the cloud (albeit encrypted). However, Telegram has the decryption keys so can potentially view your messages and anyone else they want to give access to. They could also potentially target you for advertising based on the content of your chats (not implying they do this, but nothing preventing them doing that either).

Whatsapp is 100% end to end encryption. Your messages are not stored on a cloud server (well not quite true, if you can elect to backup your chats to Google Drive, but that's under your control with only you having access. Additionally, I think (but not confirmed) that it would be encrypted with your public key)).

@Daver6
You can't really have multi-platform client if they don't store everything in the cloud. That's the reason why you can always re-download all your stuff with Telegram, while with Whatsapp once you've downloaded something it's gone for good on the cloud and you to rely exclusively on your phone.

I've lost pictures and videos received over Whatsapp because of this.

I'm not really debating that fact. You enquired as to why I said Telegram has worse privacy than Whatasapp and I provided a response in that context.

As to your specific issue of losing pictures and videos - you could either save them somewhere (not hard to say get Google Photos to backup your Whatsapp videos and images automatically. Alternativly use the built in functionality of Whatsapp to backup your Whatsapp conversations and media.

As for the mulit-platform client. That's not quite correct. Whatsapp and Signal have solutions to that issue where you can have desktop clients. Main difference is they're connecting to your phone which is acting as the server/source of your chats.

@Daver6 yet WhatsApp appeared by 2009, the backup feature was only introduced by 2015. So what happened I've switched smartphones losing conversations. Not only that but if you removed some media from the WhatsApp folder and put it back wasn't recognized anymore as own, and you couldn't open it clicking the thumbnail. Of course now should be fixed.

Also WhatsApp recompresses all your media with the excuse of removing GPS metadata, however sometimes the content is scrambled. Nobody sends media as archives to preserve the original quality because then also thumbnails are not generated and a blunt icon is shown.

Maximum file size is 16MB vs 2GB I mean what's the point.

As said WhatsApp is not meant for archiving purposes and incurs in heavy data loss because has to work on really budget devices like Nokia 6300 4G.

Welcome to AFF.

If they wanted to send a message to me, I'd suggest e-mail. :) I'm sure it could be convoluted into an 'app' if you really needed it as such.

I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make here. I'm not advocating Whatsapp over a different platform. I merely made a comment about security and privacy (in response to someone else). I'm not trying to convince you to switch either. You stated some problems you ran into and I was trying to be helpful with workarounds/solutions.

Carry on as you were if Telegram is what works for you.

So, how do I survive by having none of these? 🤣

Edit: What happened to texting and email, for communicating. Not apps of course

@DC3 it's like not having credit/debit card, I just have a bank account in another country, if you like you can make a direct debit against it and we're done.

I don't think that analogy works does it? But if I'm able to make a direct debit against your bank account then I'm up for that! 🤣
