Why does getting on a plane make some people so dumb?

Just landed at LAX. CR7 from SLC, landed on 24R then onto taxiway AA. PA from the crew saying they were going to be taxing for a few minutes to the remote terminal and we stop at the hold bar waiting to cross 24L/6R. People start to get up - seconds after being told they were ~10 minutes away from the gate.

Last week, flying LGA-MIA. After departure, the person across the aisle from me was watching something on their tablet, without earphones. Flight attendant gave them the AA domestic earphones. The pax did nothing with them. Flight attendant comes back past and tells him that he needs to use headphones. Pax then starts an augment about it, opened the earphone pack and throw them forward into the galley, and claimed that because the safety video was put over the PA, he didn't have to use earphones to watch his video.
I was on a flight from Dubai to Ethiopia last year and a man in front of me was complaining about many things to the flight attendants. Being a bit difficult. Anyway we just landed and were still taxiing to the gate just off the runway. So this goose stands up to get his bags from the overhead. I told him to sit down as it was still unsafe and the seat belt sign was still on. Just because you are American you cannot talk to me because I am an Emeriti...I said I'm not American and I don't care if you are the Prince of Persia...you are breaking the law and it's unsafe...sit down...his daughter (in her 30s) was embarrassed and apologized to us and said he is always like this. Unfortunately these bad habits are created by the stupidity of the passenger and also the airlines not cracking down on these things...I see it all the time....

And when you open the door, because the vacant sign is on, they look at you horrified as though you are the most disgusting perv on board .....

Yep, happened to me recently, they thought that because they had not locked the door, it was somehow my fault. :)

It's probably an entire other thread, but I do know a couple of funny (or horrifying) stories about that.

Then... once on the aircraft, they go to the loo and don't lock the door.
Now that you mention it. That also happened on one of my flights last week. DFW-SLC. Someone came up to use the forward loo, didn't lock the door (being in the alise seat, first row makes that easy to notice).

We landed at LAX and going to the gate and someone stood at the exit doors. Despite 3 warnings, he wouldnt sit down. Then the captain stopped the plane. Dead stop. Announced we werent moving until the guy sat down and if he doesnt do it now, he will be met with police when the door is opened. Pax started shouting "sit down" to the guy, he did but not happy about it. We were row 1 so off first so no idea what happened after that. Never seen a pilot stop a plane in the middle of his taxi before.

We live more and more insular, on social media where we dont see actual affects on others, in the comfort of our own bubble so we (as a general population) are becoming aholes.

I was noticing today the number of people walking across the street with their faces in their phones and scrolling. No one is that important they need their phones in their faces almost non stop.
Yesterday I was centimetres away from hitting a guy (pedestrian) with his face in his phone. He looked very indignant when I tooted the horn and gave him the finger!

Wouldn't that be evolution in action?
I usually think of it more like a Darwin award failure.

People are stupid, I do stupid things and so does everyone else, but the dumber ones are more noticeable on a plane when you're stuck with them for hours. I don't see it as being much different to catching a train or bus, people still use their phones/tablets at max volume then miss their stop as they weren't paying attention. Some make genuine mistakes, some don't realise they're annoying others, others simply don't care but everyone has to put up with them for the entirety of the flight.

I suppose on a plane you don't have to worry about missing your airport...

I think I am going to leave this subject alone...

But ... what about the people who think Row 40 is at the front of the plane? Every flight I take there is a staggering number of people who either can't count or have no concept of numbers. How hard is this?

Gave him the finger? Classy.

Glad to see to see being overtly rude to a stranger is considered more appropriate than being distracted ....

The guy is lucky to be alive and I am lucky not to have killed someone. He is lucky that I was overtly rude to him and was able to realise that!!!

No. He is still alive and probably resents losing face!
I apologise because I know this is off topic, but you seem to be genuinely aggrieved by this person as if them almost killing themselves was a personal attack on you.

What was so horrible for you? Did you have to slow down a bit to avoid killing him?

I just ask because I often wonder what makes aggressive drivers tick. Recently I saw an angry ute driver throw a full beer bottle from the drivers side at a car in front for what I can only assume was taking too long to overtake and hence slowing the ute’s progress.
