What is this "space" next to this seat - A350-900?

Good evening. My friend and I are flying to Thailand via Singapore. We've already booked our flights, chosen seats etc. Thought I'd have a look tonight and notice there are 2 lots of 2 seats up the back of the plane on our SIN-BNE flight - we've chosen window/middle (taking turns each leg) and the aisle seats have already been filled.

I hate the thought of having to climb over some poor random to visit the loo etc and then I noticed the set of 2 seats (on just one leg). Seat Guru does say Row 70 is Red so won't be choosing that one but Row 69 is one good seat and aisle seat yellow - Proximity to gallery may be bothersome. I'm doing aisle (atm it's middle in Row 68) on this leg and I'd find that less bothersome than disturbing a stranger.

Anyway the thing is the "window" seat doesn't really seem like it is against the window. Shirley it can't have just an empty space there? Does anyone know what the void is?

No distinguishing marks or features on the SIA website (for A359-900 V.3), so probably just two seats together like the row behind.

It may be due to the narrowing of the fuselage and the seat map doesn’t accurately reflect the position of the seats.

I checked with SQ crew, and compared with other airlines’ a350 seats maps… it is not a crew escape hatch.

Some airlines have a WC in that space. My crew friend thought it might be that the fuselage is narrowing there, necessitating the 2 seat arrangement, and where other airlines have put in a WC, SQ has opted for 2 x 2 seats.

Definite only 2 seats this row as fuselage narrows to rear of aircraft - I have seen this many times- and indeed have sat in these several times

No no.. it’s real. If you look at the a380 seat maps, economy, you’ll see a single missing aisle seat in the middle of the economy cabin in one of the DEFG sets… that’s for a crew escape hatch from under the floor sleeping. On qantas it is 70D that is missing. On SQ, depending on the layout, but 50D is the equivalent.

Looking at the images of the aircraft, it would seem that AB have moved the crew rest to the aft overhead position. But, the original location looks to have been under the aft floor, so it could have been the hatch location. As there is a K seat, I can't see why there wouldn't be an A seat.

No, it's an emergency escape hatch...for when they can't get out via the normal exit.

If the pilot rest was up the back and something happened up the front - yes

I also remember that the cabin directly below the crew rest does not have any overhead luggage bins. It’s just a solid moulding with a slightly lower ceiling

Yes, but it seems that Airbus was originally putting in below the aft floor. At some point they changed its location. That potentially leaves some legacy items behind.

Sadly some airlines do place pilot rests well away from the coughpit.

Again, that's where it is on some aircraft, but not all. Some (perhaps all) EK aircraft have a row of passenger toilets across the area that would have been used for a forward pilot rest. Everything is optional.

The 777 has a crew rest area upstairs, yes upstairs above 1st behind the coughpit. It is a bit claustrophobic though.
