What is the attraction of lounges?

Lounges are useful when they are a necessity, but why anyone goes out of their way to spend time in them my mind boggles at. Life is too short, and probably shortened further by the time spent in them.
Well, to give one example ... my better-half is often booked on seats “up the back of the bus”, and she finds the food they serve doesn’t play well with her innards. She’d therefore rather arrive at the airport within the recommended time before departure (which when you’ve got F check-in and priority through security is really too early) and get something reasonable to eat before getting onboard.

For me it’s a massive novelty getting into an F lounge, I’ve been in two and would definitely enjoy (enjoying is important!) myself during a visit to the F lounges I’ve heard of that have good nummies - eg. I’ve heard CX does good dumpling & good noodle ...

With "F" priority, that'd normally mean either booked "F" or high status, so why is she "up the back of the bus"?

But for an F lounge, I'd definitely make use of it as well.

If she takes last minute flights all the good seats are taken regardless of status level.

Having just experienced Cathay’s First Class Lounge The Wing I’ll add to the standard nice ‘free’ meal, chance to shower before a flight with the new try out a private Cabana and have a relaxing bath before your flight!

She has two groups of people booking her travel; one mob is OK with J, the other is not (but they have yet to work-out a way to ensure she gets no status points even though she gets no FF points). So last year she had Platinum status, yet was flying Y half the time.

Actually it occurred to me while wallowing in the back-yard mud today ... a lounge is most useful when you’re not travelling in the class the lounge is intended for.

Ok, sorry, I thought you meant the back of the bus literally rather than just in Y. The reason, I had a recent flight where I really was in the back of the bus and gave my seat to +1 at the front of the bus. She got a snack but I missed out as they had run out by the time it didn't get to me!

Lounges are bad when there's a delay. 7 bread rolls and 3 slices of cake and counting. ;)
