Is ADL security at it again. The post may be a bit of a rant, I am a traveler with very fixed routines so anything different I notice also this is not intended to be an ADL bashing, I live there and fly out on a weekly basis and have done so for more years than I care to remember.

Yesterday going through security there was the standard security chant remove all laptops, aerosols, umbrellas, phones etc., what I picked up on was iPads were to be removed. WTF I thought I cannot remember when the last time I had to take out my iPad at security in AU so I just ignored this and put may bag through. Sure enough it was set a side and had to be rescanned with the iPad removed. I asked the security person was the need to remove iPads and other tablet devices a new rule.

I was informed that the machine could not see through the iPads I thought was lot a load of rubbish, it is the same:
  • iPad that I have been using for months,
  • iPad that past through ADL security last week and the weeks/months before that without been removed from my HL
  • iPad that gets past through in MEL and SYD every other week whilst in HL.
  • X-ray machine as last week
I get that Airport security may not be the most exciting job in the world well some may get a kick out of it but why just randomly change rules. Time to get off my soap box and come to the realisation that for the next 4-6 weeks - remember to take out iPad until things go back to normal. Rant over

Did you miss the bit where I queried teething problems?

Nope. The issues were happening before then for me - early April. And continuing still. So I don’t connect the actions and the announcements. And I don’t think the new system has been implemented yet anyway, well, not last couple of weeks anyway.

That's your experience I guess. On the rare occassions I go to Adelaide, I've never been asked to remove an ipad.

It’s a new thing. Neither had I until early April. 5th April to be exact. That’s why Matt_001 started the thread yesterday. We live here.

Ok, you're going around in circles. What other NEW thing happened for Adelaide in April. Hmm, let me think - New security system...

BTW one of the handfull of times I flew from Adeliade in the last 12 months was 20 April. Ipad in bag.

Announcement was made on April 11. For the future. No body scanners. No auto return of trays. I’m not going around in circles.

Yep, have been through ADL 3 times in the last few days and they are hot on iPads. Just the fad of the month unfortunately. I just grin and bear it now. My wife has just set a PB in ADL of now being swabbed for her 34th consecutive time, I still haven’t been tested in months, much to her anger. She must look dodgy :p

If I’m travelling with husband I usually take one for the team as he travels much more than me and is pretty much over the process. But they are even leaving me alone these days. Except for the iPad now. Care to guess what’s next on the fad list? We have umbrellas and iPads currently.

My wife always has to remove her jacket at ADL

This is the thing that infuriates me with the swabbing. I went through a phase where I only had to look at an airport to get swabbed. And yet they insist every time that it's random!

Security theatre is an intelligence-led process. Maybe there's something about ADL; maybe there's something about portable computing devices... who knows. Those who do are certainly not going to publish it in a forum.
Or it may be nothing at all: completely random. Predictability is a threat to the security process.

It's just a thing that happens and we all have no control over it. Jackets, hats, vests, umbrellas, laptops inside sleeves, laptops out, devices powered on, shoes off etc etc etc. It just is and in most cases we will not know why. Ponder it over the first drink in the lounge if you must, but no point getting worked up over it.

Adelaide is the absolute worst airport in the country for security BS. Should experience the “must throughly check the captains asic” (even though they have no requirement to).

It’s a sad state of affairs in this country. Security is outsourced to the lowest price, and the staff in turn match this.

It’s a worry that MSS is one of the largest providers. Points for the first person who figures out what MSS stands for.

It's supposed to be Managed Security Services but I reckon it's Mostly Sloppy* Security (based on what I can publish here)
Funny, Like and Agree.

I asked the security person why I had to take out the iPad this week when I’ve never had to before. He just he didn’t know just that today was his first day. Maybe there’s a different group of people working there now? Marking their territory so to speak.

Brisbane is the worst in my experience

As someone with 2 replacement hips, and who lives in Adelaide, I'm used to it.
Belt off, shoes off, laptop out, and let them lead me on.
I always love it when they ask me if I'm OK doing it in the public area, or would I like to use a separate private room!!!!!!!!!!
The bit that really gets me is after the metal wand over the body is to lift up my shoeless feet so they can scan the soles of my feet - wonder what would happen if I wore thongs????
