What irritates you most while flying?

So you can see I am seriously short of Islay whiskeys presently. It seems that they are the ones that get consumed first at my place. The others have plenty of dust on the boxes.

I just finished my first bottle of Lagavulin that I bought on a friend's recommendation - wow! I enjoyed it but, definitely an acquired taste!

You should try Laphroaig next. Smells like coal tar and drinks like smoke ash. Fabulous stuff. Actually I am surprised the earlier poster didn't like Chivas as a scotch style because of all the scotch's this one has a heart of Islay, whereas JW is much more highland.

Ever sat next to someone for 12 hours with really bad BO? Not good, even in Business.

Not good in F either when they decide to sleep in the suit rather than getting into the sleeper suit - the pong was awful :(

Hmm, I am going to have to pay more attention and see just how many people use diet coke as a mixer. My hypothesis is very few.

Apart from G&T, my only "mixer" is Scotch + Diet Coke with Vanilla. Give it a try and you will see what I mean, but make sure the whiskey is blended (I use White Heather). My wife once got desparate for a sundowner and used one of my single malts (Laphroig) and rendered it undrinkable. OK - I did drink it because of my scottish heritage, but it was truly awful!

And at the risk of turning this into another reclining debate .... why is it that many pax recline as soon as the SBS goes off? It is almost some sort of pissing in the corners response to the restricted personal space. If you have a bad back or want to get some sleep then that's cool, but most of the time it's just a "because I can" action. I guess it mirrors our soulless society, but I hoped Australia (and the World) would be better than this.

My mistake.

I prefer 'dry' with my scotch. Much nicer than coke, but interested to try the vanilla coke :)

Hmmm, started to reply to this hours ago, oh well post anyway :)

I can't even remember what irritates me the most but i would say people trying to steal a seat when i have 4 in a row to myself :)

I've not flown nearly as much as some of you, and I'm generally fairly hard to annoy, but I really hate having to climb over people to get to the bathroom or to stretch my legs. On a JAL flight from NRT to LHR, I kept waiting for the very large woman on the aisle seat to wake up. Eventually, I couldn't wait any longer and had to perform acrobatic feats to climb over her slumbering form towards freedom (and the loo).

I'm sure I annoy some people, though, as I'm one of those people who are constantly in and out of their carry-on bags swapping books, getting lollies and just generally rummaging around.

I would suggest changing your seat preference to Aisle - easier for everyone that way :)

This was back when I was 18 and just took whatever seat I got given by the airline. But I must admit, I'm a sucker for the window seat and the view, plus somewhere to put my head when I sleep! The way I've now preselected seats for the flights to the States at Christmas, it will only be Mr Vane next to me. I have no problem climbing over him or telling him to get up and let me out! ;)

we 'are' talking about public transport here - I have no qualms in saying 'excuse me' while hoping over people to constantly get to the toilet after 8 beers :p

its just lucky for others that I now prefer an aisle seat ;)

As others have said, nominate the isle as your preference. I've done this for years for that reason - I'm up regularly to exercise. Even business class suffers from this. I dread being in business in the centre with someone on each side. If I can't get an isle, I at least want a window. I like to get up whenever I want - this is more important than looking out the window. I'm sure others prefer the view. If you want the view and freedom to get up anytime, it will have to be first. (I for one can't afford it, but love the upgrades)

I don't get up that often--maybe twice in a longhaul flight, and not at all during domestic ones. I do like looking out the window. And I hate being 'rude' and climbing over people, but it can't really be helped in cattle class.

If you cop DVT after a long haul flight and survive, you'll be up and down like a yoyo to keep the blood moving. I had it once - if you see someone doing pushups on the stairs on a 747, it's me.

Do you take any of the following to prevent DVT?;
  1. Aspirin (thins the blood)
  2. Fish Oil (makes blood less sticky)
  3. Wine in moderation (also thins the blood)

I have taken asprin, wine in moderation (for other reasons - I like it). However, for long haul (24 hours) I give myself a clexane injection. I had a suspected DVT a few years ago, and decided to play safe. (I have always been very active in planes - regular walking and stretching at the top of the stairs in a 747)

We need to be clear that "thinning the blood" is the wrong idea. It's the rate of coagulation that's important, rather than a viscosity thing.

Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation - thoroughly enjoying it :)

I am glad you enjoyed it. Malt whiskey is just so individualistic. Funnily enough I recently learnt one of the biggest markets for Malt whiskey is France - they don't drink Cognac anymore (the biggest market is asia). I don't know why but I find the thought of a French person sitting down to a bottle of Malt whiskey faintly amusing. :D

Not really so surprising. The French and Scots have been closely aligned for over 700 years. The Auld Alliance

Yes that is true and always better than mixing with the English!
Aye laddie. The french are so much more civilized than those uncouth Sassenachs ;).

I rarely recline my seat so people behind me must love me! We watched movies on our recent flights and nodded off. It does anoy me when the person in front reclines straight away and I have no qualms about asking the FA to get them to put their seats upright for meals.

I would really like to see airlines install a non-reclining section for people who like to sit upright and like to sit behind other upright seats. Maybe the first 5 rows on the right side of the plane-non recliners? Or more if they are popular?
