What I ate today - the food thread

T-Chow, ADL Chinatown, AFF ADL catch-up.

Eggplant hotpot with steamed rice.

Amazing eggplant dish 😍 the original dish had eggplant and minced pork. But the veg variant had fried eggplant with mixed veggies and beans. Simmered in a flavourful sauce. Served with steamed rice.

The dish was so good that I let the wait and reception staff know about it and ask them to pass on my compliments to the chef. ☺️

As always, to suit my personal preference - I took assistance from a serve of fresh chillies to zhuzh the dish up 😀

Accompanied with a generous, yet slightly less flavourful serving of jasmine green tea.

The much awaited “Sangaweech”, Lygon Street, Melbourne.

This place has been all the rage for the past few weeks. Sangaweech is a sandwich place opened by “Sooshi Mango” who run social channels on Facebook and other socials. I follow them for their content, predominantly about Italian culture. So when I saw a post that they were opening a sandwich place, I wanted to try this place. Had planned a couple of times to transit MEL to try this place, but plans didn’t work out last minute. Made it a point to make a stopover at MEL to try this place. Brought along a mate who was very keen to try this place and was patience enough when I had to cancel on them a couple of times, so it is only fair that this meal was my shout 🤣

So there’s a really long queue to get it. We reached the place around 1200. The shop opens by 1100. We were fashionably late, which didn’t help us and we had to queue for approx 40 mins before we could place our orders.

The wait staff were really cool. One of the staff members walks around the queue offering menus so that we could peruse and be ready to place our orders when we get the register.

We were handed a menu and we knew what wanted to try. There were two vego sandwiches on the menu and we ordered both. I also ordered a pistachio shake for a drink.

Once we made our payments - then store asks for a mobile number. A text message is sent when the order is ready to collect. It took about 15 mins after we paid for our order before the order was ready for pickup.

We wandered to other shops in the area and got a text that the order was ready for pickup. We picked it up and found a quote place to enjoy our sandwiches. There are seating outside the restaurant but those were always full.

Started with “The Backyard”. Generous spread of pesto, perfectly cooked potatoes, not so spicy peppers, provolone cheese, melted to the right amount between two halves of fresh bread 😍 amazing sando.

Followed by “La Bella” - more like the belle of the ball for me. Mozzarella cheese, two types of tomato - fresh and pickles green tomatoes, rocket salad, generous drizzle of balsamic vinegar. By the time we got to this sandwich, the bread had soaked all the balsamic and turned sharp. Loved it 😊 will definitely order again.

In between bites, managed to down the pistachio shake. To me the sandwiches were the hero (as they rightly should be). The shake was a’ight.

What stood out for me was that these sandwiches were simple things done right. I’d definitely come back for that Nutella Sangaweech someday 😆

Dinner at I Love Dumplings, St. Kilda.

Started with crumbed eggplant. Crumbed and deep fried. Good entree.

IMG_5248.jpeg

We ordered side of the schezuan sauce. Had a nice tingling feeling as the meal went on.

Followed by pan fried veg dumplings. Really well done. Definitely order again.

For mains, we asked the wait staff what vego item they’d recommend - the staff suggested Chinese broccoli. We ordered it and asked for a serve of fried rice.

The Chinese broccoli was superb. Crunchy stems, blanched leaves drenched in a garlicky, sesame dressed sauce. Chefs kiss 😎😍

IMG_5252.jpeg

The fried rice was done really well and nicely accompanied the Chinese broccoli.

As it Is customary for me, I always go with jasmine tea with my meals. My mate, who doesn’t like any tea - loved this Jasmine tea. We had to order a second serve to keep us going for the duration of the whole meal 😆

I’d definitely go back to this place again.
