What I ate today - the food thread

Started yesterday with breakfast at Tamarind Restaurant ( NDB Hotel Bali)
Seaview Benedict - mine with Salmon, his with Beef Brisket- tasted more like bacon ( no pork on any menu)

Tried to book Maguro Restaurant and/or Raja's Balinese Restaurant for Mr Flyfrequently's birthday dinner but both booked out. So back to Tamarind for dinner.

A delicious Chocolate cake

I actually had nothing to do with it for a change!

As with all meals we have had in the hotel, Accor Plus Dining discount applied without issue.
All looks really tasty!! A very happy birthday to Mr Flyfrequently 🥂

Mrsdrron had the carpaccio followed by scallops. She liked both.

I had the vgetable tmpura. Wold be disappointing if expecting the classial japanese version bt it was nice with very little bater and nice fresh veggies retaining their taste.
IMG_2970.jpg

I then had the fish pie. This was disappointing. The layer of mashed potato on the top was too thick with only a small layer of seafood. It came out very hot and the temperature caused the seafood to be overcooked.

We were going to have sweets but a large group rearranged the bar seat to behind us. they were very loud so we opted to go back to the room.

Back to ADL and taking in the food scene.

Dinner at Satang Thai, Waymouth street, ADL CBD.

Some interesting artwork on the walls - Thai style painting of, what I assume is, The Last Supper.

Very lively vibe - busy and noisy. Reasonably priced Thai fare. Restaurant was busy and bustling.

Started with veg spring rolls. Nice crunch, served extremely hot - need to careful next time before biting in. Switched quickly to knife and fork from the 2nd bite. 😂

Followed by Ginger Tofu and rice. Amazing dish. Nice flavour of ginger. Veggies had a nice crunch, sauce was silky smooth.

With, of course, a generous serve of fresh chilli 🌶️

Was very filling after the above, so skipped dessert. The dessert menu was rather sparse - only one item “coconut ice cream”.

Some drawbacks for me personally was;

1. The restaurant didn’t have any hot drinks (tea, coffee etc). I prefer to have jasmine/lemongrass tea with Thai/asian style food.

2. The restaurant don’t do roti. ACK roti aren’t authentic to Thai restaurants.

3. Dessert menu was only one item - I’d have expected at least 3 items - to give customers the choice.

4. Only one type of rice (white rice) was available. I’m given to understand (and in my experience) that Thai places usually do coconut rice also, but not here.

For people that prefer food other than vegetarian there’s plenty of options. My colleagues raved about the beef, duck and chicken dishes. But everyone noticed and pointed out some of the drawbacks I listed above.

Overall a nice place for a nice meal. Definitely value for money. Will visit again.

Impromptu AFF mini-meetup with @CaptJCool and @MG1 at Two-Bit Villains, Rundle Mall, ADL CBD. Fully vegetarian, some vegan restaurant.

The idea for this mini-meetup was conceived during the AFF Masterclass. @MG1, I and @CaptJCool were exchanging travel stories, where flying to next and I mentioned that I’ll be coming to ADL this week and we all thought it would be great if we could catchup and catchup, we did.

Today’s catchup was filled with stories of travels, adventures and memories of subtle DYKWIA moments 🤣 @CaptJCool wowed us with his QR F flights and @MG1 shared his trips in SQ F among other interesting experiences.

We did discuss briefly about the Masterclass and fare rules 🤣 the fare rules have created quite an impact on many attendees of the Masterclass, including, yours truly. I did print out the 19 pages of fare rules to read during my travels.

Anyways, back to the food scene - the restaurant had a vintage vibe to it. Good selection of burgers, salads, drinks were on offer. It was noted in the menu that their specialty were sodas. I didn’t try a soda, but tried an iced tea.

As today was Wednesday, there was specials - a burger, a side and a drink for $21-$25 (depending on the drink). Definitely good value in the special menu.

I didn’t go for the special meal. I had the Buffalo “chicken”, Nashville “chicken” tenders and Texas iced tea (Turkish delight flavour).

The Nashville tenders did pack a punch. The menu warns that this item is spicy and spicy it was. Served with a side of ranch to cool things down. It tastes really good. The chilli hit the nose before hitting the tongue. The dish was overall good, but a bit too oily for my liking. May order something else next time around.

IMG_3584.jpeg

The buffalo “chicken” burger was done well. It was a take on the buffalo fried chicken burger with ranch and buffalo sauce. Definitely a good burger. Loved it. Will order again. The ranch made the dish a bit sweeter; so next time, I’ll ask for chilli sauce or jalapeños to balance the sweetness.

IMG_3583.jpeg

The Texas style iced tea (Turkish delight flavour) was a delight to drink. The Turkish delight flavour was very subtle. I’d have preferred a bit stronger flavour. Next time, I’ll ask to reduce the amount of ice and add a bit more flavouring.

The menu was decently priced and service was quick. Staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely come back.

I notice you photographed before the jam and cream to avoid scrutiny
Those of us that hail from Devon know that there is only one right way to. Jam on first. After all it is commonly known as a DEVONshire tea.
Now the neighbours in Cornwall think they know all the answers but their problem is that they often serve clotted cream with the jam and scones. The clotted cream is damn hard to spread over the jam and I do admit I then put cream first and pray for forgiveness.

TBV is one of my stops whenever I'm in Adelaide. Haven't had the same thing twice, and enjoyed each time.
The sodas are good, can't recommend one in particular as I keep the variety up!
