What have you had taken off you by security?

Nail clippers (pretty dangerous, actually).

Nail clippers or nail scissors? I have nail clippers in my toiletries bag for carry on, and never questioned on them, but know tons who get done with nail scissors.

Was behind a lass in PVG two days ago, going through security on a domestic flight in China, and she was busy in the line putting her nail scissors in her shoes and trying to make them positioned so she could walk comfortably through - and was surprised she got through successfully as well.

Still giggle each time I go through security in China, and the massive pile of lighters - which are taken off people to stop them smoking on flights in China - but feel sorry when expensive zippo lighters etc are taken off with the same vigor and discarded at security.

If you turn the clipping lever so it extends the length of the clippers then they look much less like clippers, even to the trained eye.

Trick is attach a key or two and to have clippers horizontal and to put bag through in upright position.

Voila, looks like long eliptical locker keyring.

Done it a couple of times, no fails yet.

Took them 3 years to get my Carabiner knive keyring ;-)

I've had scalpel blades travel internationally with me over 20 times before I noticed and removed them. Security theatre at its' best.

Yep I've done this and removed them myself after about 20 flights.

Also the worse case were bullets carried by police commissioner Simon Overland.

I remember when the LAG rules first came in and was always careful to ensure I never had sunscreen in my camera bag.

After 12 months of flying and umpteen security scans throughout Europe, the US, AU, Asia and SE Asia (domestic & international), I was pulled aside at LAX for a closer bag inspection. Lo and behold, the sunscreen I'd thought I'd mislaid 12 months previous was revealed!! It had made its way under all the gear between the bag itself and the insert holding said gear.

Suffice to say, my (lack of) faith in all the security measures known to man that have been put in place after the Shoe Bomber incident, was reinforced. It wasn't a small container either - about 150ml from memory. How it was missed every other time I'd been through LAX I'll never know - guess that particular day the TSA had eagle-eyed operators on duty. :p

A poor woman was travelling in a group but she had all the packets of creams, within size, for 4 people (not to mention about 4 x 1L bottles of lotion which she was ok with disposing). Unfortunately her three other companions had passed through security and gone on their way so she had to forfeit the small creams as well!

As for myself, I had duct tape in my carry on while I went through security in India x 4, Singapore x 4 and Sydney x3. But leaving from Perth domestic I had it taken off me as it was dangerous and could be used to restrain someone. Fair enough no biggie, but funny thing is in Singapore they had a look at it and said no problems.. I just wish the rules were more uniform - even across Australia as it was no problem in Sydney.

I often travel with 48mm wide, 75 mts long clear packing tape as my carry on, as my checked in bags are cartons and not bags, so need it sometimes mid journey to repackage my checked in bags/cartons.

LoL, Ironic that the one port you are leaving and may be in need of duct tape to restrain a FIFO boozed up from the lounge who happens to be on your flight.

Be wary of Perth Virgin terminal then haha!

Day time flight - the only ones still around then would be so hammered they wouldn't even need to be restrained.

For something a little bit different - had a rigger jigger nearly taken off me the other day.

Returning from rowing nationals with the better half and she had left her rigger jigger in my bag. It's basically a 12mm spanner.

Fortunately there were some fellow rowers that had yet to check in so was able to drop it in one of there bags - was better than losing it completely. Although it may well have gone to the never never anyway!

Queensland domestic is the worse, you would think dealing with so many tourists because of the GBR, they would be better educated.

My item of potential death and destruction, a scuba regulator as per sample picture less the console hose.

Apparently I "can swing it around my head like a weapon".

Me: Have you ever sat in economy? You cant swing a dead cat let alone a Reg.

PNG, I had a 50ml StingGoz bottle spray removed.

HAHAHAHAHAAA!!! I loved your reply :D
But then again, airport staff just doesn't have any humour at all, doesn't matter what they do.

Well to follow on from my 2010 experience where AKL security ripped off 2 X 1.5cm plastic swords off one of my sons toys, a battle hamster.

Yesterday I got set up well and truly.

Short story, got handed presents at short notice and would take hours to readjust my bags to be on the safe side, so after asking what they were, liquids, gels, knife looking objects etc and assured all is harmless, proceeded to carry them on through AKL security on flight to BNE.

They didn't like what they saw in the xray, so wanted to open up to check.

And pictures are what we found.

They confiscated the packaging, and allowed me to continue with toy.

in 2010 I had a Starwars Lightsaver in its original packaging (present for a 10yr old) confiscated at Perth International after being ok from Melbourne. I was told it was a dangerous weapon, and if I didn't stop giving him a hard time I would not get on the plane. Have not been back to Perth since.

A case of what DIDN't get taken from me.
Last year I flew Johannesburg (Tambo Intnl) to Kigali (Rwanda). When unpacking my carry on back pack in Kigali I realised I had forgotten to pack a 500ml bottle of sunscreen in my checked luggage. It had gone through two scanners without being picked up.

Going through MEL today there didn't seem to be any LAG screening even going on. No signs up about it, and didn't see anyone with a plastic bag.

What DO they do with all this booty they confiscate?

Apparently it wasn't in one transparent, resealable plastic bag. This was at Sydney airport.

Ridiculous. Been through Singapore, Dubai with the same perfume, not a question asked.

Had 30ml bottles of spirits taken off me at Beijing a week ago for domestic security because it was not cosmetic in nature and liquid rule only allowed to cosmetic products, not spirits.

And then today in sterile area on Guangzhou domestic waiting for a flight, saw this which is a massive water gun or some other toy gun, which kid wanting it drew my attention to it.
