As the title asks. Have you visited a country when it was called something else? I'm thinking of the Eastern Bloc, East/West Germany, enclaves that changed hands, countries that changed their names.

For me:
  • Hong Kong, while it was a British colony and after
  • Macau, while it was a Portuguese colony and after
  • Republic of Bophuthatswana Bophuthatswana - Wikipedia
I'm going to throw South Africa in as a bonus as while the country name didn't change, the flag did.

Rangoon - Burma: not really a visit but a transit stop flying BOAC from Australia to the UK in 1973.
West and East Berlin in 1987.

Diego Garcia, in the middle of nowhere but has has a number of owners/ administrators since it was first discovered.

Harbin in China is another, I think it was once part or claimed by Russia, then the Japanese had a turn through occupation and finally reclaimed by China under communist rule. Now it is a great place to visit in the winter for the ice festival.

Also been to Hong Hong, Macau and East Deutschland.

Whilst talking former colonies, would Singapore, India, Canada, Africa, the US and parts of South America etc., also be included. From memory most of the world was once claimed by the Poms and other Europeans e.g. Germany, France, Spain etc. Then there is Korea claimed I think by both Japan and China at some stage then split in two last century. Further what other Asian countries would be considered to be part of Japan during their occupation.

Oooh, and Bankstown before it was de-gentrified, and also about a year ago!
I grew up in Sydney and there was a time when I was younger that one would not venture into such places as Glebe, Balmain, Paddo, Wolloomooloo, Surry Hills - well the whole of inner Sydney be it west, east or south. How things change.

Oooh, I also spent some time in Condell Park, that up market suburb just next to Bankstown. ;)

As I am now thinking to deeply into this topic, is there any Country, Nation, State etc. that has not been claimed/ conquered by another empire be it Egyptian, Roman, Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, British, Spanish etc. Is there any one place left that throughout known history has never been claimed.

Hah, yes I worked in Redfern for ages (to the the shock of many) before it was gentrified.. Frankly it was nowhere as bad as some made out. Though I must admit I avoided Everleigh St.

I reckon everywhere has been claimed but it is arguable that the Arctic and Antarctic regions have only been claimed once. Although I suspect Antarctica will have some claims made by the PRC in the very near future.

Projecting into the (perhaps not too distant) future "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" : get there now whilst you still have the chance. :p

Indeed, but not too many AFF'ers were around when the Mongolians ruled as far west as Europe  I took OP as meaning, you visited the country before it split/dissolved/changed name, not after. After is relatively easy.
