Zaire
Central African Republic (before it became the Central African Empire and its subsequent restoration)
West/East Germany
Hong Kong
Macau
Burma
Iran before the Ayatollah

I have stamps in an old passport from;
Rhodesia
Zimbabwe-Rhodesia
Zimbabwe

all gathered over a period of a few months in early 1980. I also have a passport stamp from ZImbabwe on April 18 1980, the day it became officially independent as we drove down from Lusaka in Zambia to see what all the fuss was about.

Also been to southern Sudan when it was just part of Sudan and the Sinai when it was part of another country (Israel).

I should also add Alsace, currently (since 1919) in north-eastern France but at various times in history it has been part of south-western Germany. And we will be back there (hopefully it is still French) in September.

USA (formerly part of British empire). France, Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Israel, Malta (formerly part of the Roman Empire). How far back can we go?

Czechia - when it was the Czech Republic
North Macedonia - when it was the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
Eswatini - when it was Swaziland
Sint Maarten - when it was part of the Netherlands Antilles

North Macedonia's a good one. It's very possible someone has visited when it was part of Yugoslavia, then FYR Macedonia and now North Macedonia. A rare triple change.

Gold Coast, Togo, Dahomy, Upper Volta, Ivory Coast, Bangladesh when it was still Pakistan, Czechoslavakia (then Communist), Yugoslavia (ditto), Congo Brazzaville, West and East Germany, UAE, Gilbert & Ellice Islands, more than one earlier French Republic...
And Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory before they gained self government and were liberated from the evil Australian Commonwealth!

Apparently there are only 22 countries that Britain has not invaded at some point

Seems like the beginnings of another thread! I have been to Central African Republic (actually it was the Central African Empire when I entered the country and reverted back to the republic a few days later), Luxembourg, Sweden and the Vatican City. The eldest junior cygnet is currently living in Bolivia.

Perhaps Bojo can finish the job! Here is the list;

Andorra
Belarus
Bolivia
Burundi
Central African Republic
Chad
Congo, Republic of
Guatemala
Ivory Coast
Kyrgyzstan
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Mali
Marshall Islands
Monaco
Mongolia
Paraguay
Sao Tome and Principe
Sweden
Tajikistan
Uzbekistan
Vatican City

Not much to add really apart from the usual:
East Germany
West Germany
Yugoslavia

And the unrecognised apartheid era 'homelands' of Ciskei, Transkei and Bophutatswana. I did get a visa at the border for Transkei. Ciskei just was a sign on the highway and only took about 30 minutes to pass through from (faded) memory.

Well the title does say "you" must have visited the former country.

Suprised we haven't got any pre-1975 PNG visitors yet.

I haven't visited, but also, does it count to visit the Principality of Hutt River, prior to 2007? (that was when High Court took a few seconds to rule that argument put forward that it was independent were "fatuous, frivolous and vexatious. ":p

I think it counts but I haven't visited either.

Yeah add me to the Hutt River Province. I met Sir Leonard (?) as a child when my parents stopped there on the way north one year. Got the HRP passport and stamps lol

South Yemen springs to mind, by road from Sanaa , does that still exist ??, as we were not allowed to fly Al Yemda on decrepit Russian metal. Czecho , Yugo of course, think Albania still exists if not for their Mafia in Europe at least !

East Germany and West Germany (now reunited)
Hong Kong (under British rule)
Macau (under Portuguese rule)
USSR (Russia and Belarus)
Zaire
