A walking 'Chemist Shop'
Not as bad as some of the other hypocondriacs who have responded in this thread. ;)

Really i am not trying to drag this topic into the gutter....

But i am supprised nobody has mentioned ... cough, Revatio, Tadalafil (Cialis), Vardenafil (Levitra) etc.... :D

I do know a few people who travel like a walking chemist shop, and on that topic i will have to see what my father brings on the way through when he visits in a couple of weeks (been to Egypt and the like) , since he is a phramacist and would only travel with what he considers essential.

It took me ages to figure out some use for those kits - not I finally have one... I just need to figure out what to do with all the extra cases I have now!;)

Get sicker and have more pills?

The F class kits are used now to hold my travel speakers for ipod/laptop - perfect size :)

I put cough in a double scotch when I arrive at my hotel after a long haul flight because my doctor recommended I have a stiff drink to relax.

0.5mg Xanax (alprozolam) for most flights over half an hour. It's allowed me to go from someone who couldn't get on a plane in 2004 to FF Gold for the second year running in 07-08.

Mine really depends on the destination and length of time.

Domestically, usually nothing but I always have a pack of Panadol in my work backpack because "I can't afford to let pain get to me!" ;)

Internationally: for Asia I will take some food poisoning tablets. Normally though, some Amoxycillin (antibiotic), Phenergan and Claratyne (both antihistmine - one drowsy, one not) and that's pretty much it.

Nothing really exciting there, but something I do that might be of use to others is that I use the QF J hard plastic amenities kit to put the tablet sheets in - It keeps them secure and stops the tablets from rupturing the foil. It took me ages to figure out some use for those kits - now I finally have one... I just need to figure out what to do with all the extra cases I have now!;)

Hahaha, I thought about using that QF hard plastic amenity kit but I decided that it was a little too unsightly.

I'd grant you that if you had the women's (bright blue) kit, but the mens dark grey one is quite unobtrusive. But does it really matter? The medicine I carry with me is not on display - it pretty much stays in my bag except when I need something from the kit and that usually only happens in the hotel room...

In preparation for a trip to China I went along to the traveldoctor in Brisbane who can sell you a complete set of goodies for almost any eventuality. As well as the prescription medicines the kits includes a book on how to self-medicate yourself with the drugs. Which ones to use when!

Kit also includes all of the correct labelling and letters to get through customers checks.

Drugs also include antibiotics for various infections, thus the need for the "how to use" guides.

We made regular use of the goers and stoppers. Even after I got home I ended up needing to finalise the trip with a dose of the gut antibiotics from the trip.

Pricing was not cheap but the kit is "complete".

my partner & I own an anti-aging clinic. on average our clients and ourselves would take around 20 nutritional and hormonal suppliments on a daily basis. our clients travel like there is no tomorrow and take all their supplimentation all around the globe.

the secret is documentation. a detailed list of your suppliments on a signed letter from your Dr addressed to customs is the only sure way to ensure you, and your meds arrive (nay depart) together.

stuff I wouldn't dream of travelling without:

melatonin - reset body clock naturally

DHEA - adrenal support, immune support, energy, clarity

probiotic - stop the bad bugs taking over, helps adj to new water system food source

formulated vitamins

somthing to back you up, something to make you go (just in case)

something for pain relief

we have followed this simple formula for several years now and have not suffered a single day of sickness through travel since. support the body naturally and it will go a very long way for you.

I've started packing motion sickness tablets too. I'd never been seasick before but discovered recently that a hangover and a day on the water don't mix.

perhaps the most memorable advice in this whole string has been to identify a use for the hard plastic "amenities" kits!

Nurofen
stopper
JetEase for long flights - I can't prove it but the general fatigue/dehydration/discombobulation seems to be less when I use it.
For prescription meds, I also get the annual letter and as well as the photocopy of the prescriptions, I put a scanned copy on my USB drive as well.

Like one or two others, my small number of food-poisoning episodes have been regular eating-places (twice in SNG) - never street vendors.

& BTW, hotel corkscrews are becoming an endangered species.
My best recent experience was at a 4+* hotel in Latin America, where the corkscrew (eventually) turned up clipped (locked!) to the belt of the hotel staff member. By then, I had remembered my undergraduate skills in opening a wine bottle with a knife inserted in the cork at the right angle ...

This has been good advice for me. I have never given it much thought until recently...... in two weeks Mrs Jasonja3 will receive one of my kidneys, and the quantity of daily medication required post transplant is substantial and ongoing, so for future travels, this kind of documentation I asume will be essential.

On my very first OS assignment (Jakarta) I took immodium tablets. Unfortunately these had little effect as a stopper. Ended up seeing a local doctor who gave me charcoal tablets. These worked a treat.

Ever since then I have not worried about carrying medication. I figure a local "medicine man" will probably have more effective treatments than anything I could bring from here.

Touch wood I have not needed anything either.

I think I took about 20 panadols in the 3 days that I was away.

So just wondering what else should be included.

20 Panadols in three days!! Either it was a good trip with plenty of p*ss or you need to see a doctor real bad. That is not a healthy amount of panadol to take over that time period. I usually take a packet of panadols (always packed in carry on luggage) and two prescription medicines + prescriptions. Interesting about the corkscrew mentioned earlier. I too have found a lack of corkscrews and other Arthur Morris's (openers for the uninitiated) in hotel rooms and it is prudent to carry your own. Don't make my mistake however. When asked at check in to transfer some checked in luggage to carry on luggage to avoid excess baggage (can you believe it - the bloody plane still weighed the same) I forgot the corkscrew was in the wet pack. It got taken by a rather attractive security screener at SYD. I told her to buy a nice bottle of wine to have with the corkscrew. Sometimes on a trip away a pleasant drink is all the medicine required

Personally, nothing works better than having a hit of Herion before take off to put you in the mood for a nice deep sleep - can be a little disconcerting for other travelers but thats their problem.

I take Cocaine when Im in the US, as this works best for those high-powered business meetings. Of course, I then need cough or Cialis afterwards.

Shared some Crystal-Meth with Ben Cousins last time- but I was up for days and couldnt sleep on the way home. That guy really knows how to party!

Not to mention a nice Bong when I get home to take the edge off all that travelling.

Hope this helps.

The maximum adult recommended dose of Paracetamol (Panadol) is 4mg (8 tablets)/ 24 hours, so still a safe level... People do die from Paracetamol over dose due to liver failure. You often find teenage girls will take an overdose for attention purposes (commonly, after breaking up with a boyfriend), thinking it is a safe drug.

How do people obtain these antibiotics? Are doctors prescribing them just in case? If so, do they give advice when to take them?
