I'm hiring a campervan in Australia and looking at insurance options. If I pay with my ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures visa card, I'll be covered for excess up to $5k, unless this:

"We will not pay:
1. for the collision excess, where the full amount payable by you under the rental vehicle agreement for damage to the rental vehicle is more than the collision excess;
Note: You will have to pay more than the collision excess when you are not covered under your rental vehicle agreement. This is because certain events or circumstances will not be covered under your rental vehicle agreement. This might vary by car rental company but could include but not be limited to such things as:
(a) a single vehicle accident;"

I'm not sure what this means. So if I have a single vehicle accident (hitting a roo?), or some other type accident/damage that's excluded by the rental company, that costs more than $5k to repair, insurance won't pay any of the $5k?

Engage the bank to get clarification, my read on this is that ‘anything’ in rental agreement that results in you requiring to pay more then excess , will not be covered by insurance, e.g you are liable to pay full cost of damage ( not excess) if you drive off road in some cases, card insurance wont cover that, single vehicle accident that is aresult of negligence is another example . In a nutshell anything that your rental company determines to be ineligible for coverage through excess is not covered( because they only provide coverage of excess), the policy clarifies this
“Note: The rental vehicle agreement will detail the circumstances where you would have to pay for more than the collision excess. This might vary by car rental company but could include but not be limited to such things as:
(a) the driver of the rental vehicle not being listed on the rental vehicle agreement;
(b) driving the rental vehicle on off-road conditions without the agreement of the rental company;
(c) for carrying a greater load or more persons than the rental vehicle is licensed for; or
(d) driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

Ah ok - understood. If I 'do something' that's not covered by the rental company I'm liable for the whole lot.

Many thanks for the response :)

I'm not sure what this means.

I think it means the insurer will pay up to $5000 if the rental car company charges you up to the excess amount for their covered events.

however for incidents that the rental cars company excludes, then the insurer pays you nothing.

I can barely understand these rental car agreements and 3rd party insurers, as best i can tell its as clear as mud.
