What Do You Do When You First Arrive at a Travel Destination?

Also to jog my memory about where I would stay again and what the room facilities were like.

Usually first I'm checking the TV has working HDMI input, and if not, I'm googling how to bypass that particular hotel model TV to make it work. Some are stubborn but I usually work it out. Fortunately the major chains are now working out most people want to watch Netflix or Youtube not VHS quality movies from three years ago.

Then it's off to CVS (or equivalent) to buy booze and water for the fridge. Scope out the ice situation (machine on the floor, or do you have to order from room service...)

Then, depending on location, it's either hit the pool bar or go bar hopping in the local area.

Put everything that is important in one spot in the hotel room, from which it is never to be moved. Passports, ID, that sort of thing.

For me that’s the safe … which has also included the odd lovely piece of hotel crockery(pls don’t tell anyone!!!!)

I used to use my QF hat. I refused to wear the stupid white one, but somebody discovered that it was waterproof and so made a good ice/drink holder.

If it's AM hours on arrival, go to my planned golf course and play. Great way to get on top of any jet lag.

If PM hours, check in, dump some stuff out of the bag, then wander out of my accom. The key question for the first time walking out is turn left or turn right? Then wander around and see if you can get yourself lost: being male that's clearly difficult! Eventually find somewhere for dinner, preferably a local place. Then play golf the next day! ️

If it's late, update OpenFlights, shower, bed.

I'm much the same as everyone on the thread. 80% of my travel was for work, so it was shower at the airport on arrival and change clothes, into the hire car, dump bags off at the hotel and go for a walk to get my bearings, work out where the bars and supermarkets were, how the public transport worked etc. I did a lot of flights to the UK and used small pubs around the area where the office was, about a 40 minutes drive from Heathrow. On the old QF9 flight, it was good as I'd arrive in the afternoon and could settle in. Swapping to QF1 meant an early arrival, but I'd have a pair of walking boots in my bags, and would go for walks around the area to clear my mind.

When travelling for pleasure with MrsK, the routine was a bit more relaxed. Get to hotel, settle into the room, watch MrsK rearrange the furniture and lamps to where she thought they should be, chat to the owners for suggestions, head out to drink/eat/relax, and repeat.

my habit is to find the most convenient power point where I can use an adapter plus my Aus powerboard to set up the "charge station", plug everything in, then head for the shower.

This habit stems from 80's, but modern rooms are increasingly providing USB ports in convenient places which makes the power board a little less critical. Old habits die hard.

Sometimes it’s not a bad habit to maintain. Depending on where you are and what you’re plugging in, hardwired USB ports can be a security risk…

Funny how we’re all creatures of habit. If we have a lovely room I too take photos of them room. Check out the toiletries, read the in-house pamphlet to see what’s available. I love visiting supermarkets on holidays

If its a budget hotel...throw bag in corner and have a nap.

If its a fancy hotel...throw bag in corner, remove 20 useless cushions...then have a nap.

Then explore, buy SIM card, dinner, snacks etc.

When I did my overseas trip a few years ago, (around Malaysia & Japan) the first thing I did whilst in the airport (if possible) was find a place to buy a SIM card, I wanted to play Pokemon Go

Upon arrival at the hotel Griselda has selected for me I am escorted to the suite that I have been upgraded to and immediately take a photograph of the car park.

Then I contact Griselda to find out if there is "another" executive lounge behind the door of the one all the AFF members are heading too........so I can avoid them.

90% of the time we arrive overseas in the morning. So drop bags at Hotel and head out. Apart from finding somewhere for dinner (rarely eat dinner in Hotels) we survey the area and often have a target museum, gallery or similar in mind. Usually buy some bottled water as well. Come back late afternoon to freshen then head out for dinner. The main aim is not to crash before 9pm, to help with time zone changes.
