What cheeses me off

Was just checking Amex online today and noticed charge of $13.50 2 days ago. Checked and found its Woolworths Delivery unlimited. Checked December and another charge of $13.50 and the same for November.
Unlimited delivery is a subscription with auto renewal. Your responsibility to cancel before the month is up.

In order to sign up for Woolies unlimited delivery you would have had to enter a payment method. I can't see how you could have signed up without also entering a payment method (unless it's changed)

It would appear that Woolworths saw fit to charge a credit card in my name that has been used to pay for shopping in the past and use that card for mums delivery unlimited without authorisation.
What else did the email that you didn’t read, say? Might it have said something like you need to cancel your subscription otherwise per the agreement you signed up for, we will be charging you?

I didn't expect this to become an issue.

For some reason I signed up mum to Woolworths delivery unlimited 1 month trial back in early October. No credit card provided, just mention of $15/month. Received an email end of October that I didn't open but mentioned that trial expiring and as I didn't provide credit card didn't think anything of it.

Isn't there a requirement on the user to cancel the service ?

Plenty of mention on Reddit and other places of Woolworths doing similar. Will be calling them tomorrow and expecting refund of $40.50 on my credit card. Otherwise chargeback. This is really disappointing.
Likely you provided a credit card at the commencement of the free trial. Seems to be a requirement for one. And didn't cancel. Ignored the email. You were charged.

Always.

Like almost any subscription service these days, they all autorenew.

Autorenewal is very convenient for most, but there probably should be an option when signing up to opt-out of autorenewal, so that you have to click something to authorise renewal.

With most of these auto renewals which I have no intention of keeping I tend to cancel the next day

WCMO with Woolies delivery is you keep paying for the paper bags and the bags just accumulate effectively making them single use.
They are a regular trying to give away on my buy nothing group. I do click and collect and say no bags but they still give you some bags, especially if you’ve got cold or frozen food.

I subscribe to the teacher resource website twinkl (purposely not capitalised as they spell it that way). Their website outlines the fee in AUD but I saw this week I’ve been charged a foreign currency fee on my credit card, as twinkl is UK based. Their help-chat said, “not our problem, that’s your bank imposing the fee”. I said, “fine, cancel my subscription and refund the full amount of the recent renewal”. They came back with an offer of a free month being added to the recently renewed annual plan, which is worth triple the $5.75 bank fee. I’ve accepted the offer, told them their site probably contravenes Australian consumer laws and to remove the auto-renewal function from my account. I count it as a win.

Same as @Gladstone Tim , WCMO are websites advertising prices in AUD, but not saying anywhere that the product is coming from overseas (as opposed to already in a warehouse in Australia), and that my credit card will be charged through an overseas bank. If I knew, I would select their currency and use my no-fee card!

Sometimes it is actually the bank! The company may indeed be charging you in AUD but because they are based overseas the bank will still levy the 3.5% charge (or whatever). Some banks charge for foreign transactions (even in AUD) rather than foreign currency transactions… so it’s not always the fault of the company!

Unfortunately the ‘refund’ would have led to a double charge by your bank… a fee for the purchase, and again for the refund. They way to do it in those circumstances is to have the merchant *void* the initial transaction. That reverses all fees. Or do a chargeback, that also reverses all fees. Unkess of course there’s been a significant change in the exchange rate… then a refund may still work in your favour even after the fees :)

So @JohnK although the delivery was for your mother did you do it with your EDR number in so collected the points. If so you signed up for the delivery and as per he T&Cs are responsibly for the charges.

No @drron. Mum's account for the delivery unlimited trial.

I really do not remember providing credit card and to be honest didn't realise it was auto renewal. When I saw the email that trial was expiring I thought that's the end of it. Then only noticed the charge yesterday.

Anyway, my fault or whatever, they have refunded the $40.50 manually as service has not been used.

That's a reasonable compromise/outcome from Woolies IMHO.

I agree with what others have mentioned previously which is that it's exceedingly rare that you can sign up for any of these trials without providing some sort of payment method from the outset. They're cleverly designed to prey on apathy or people simply not clock-watching and will regularly catch people out for at least 1 paid period. You aren't the first and you definitely won't be the last.

delivery unlimited trial.
Do you think it provided much utility for your mother?
For me an adhoc delivery slot is either $2 for a 6hr slot (usualy day after) or a $15 cost if a less than 6hr delivery slot is selected

It might be better to just have an adhoc/casual/PAYG delivery. Just spend $50 to be eligible (whereas a unlimited delivery required min purchase of $75).
You would need 7 deliveries or more a month to make unlimited deliveries worthwhile (assuming $2 delivery fee is cheapest)
