The Family Scarlett rather foolishly walked up Kosciusko today...
BOM forecast was for showers mostly in the afternoon and evening with a temp forecast of 13 max. We arrived at the Thredbo lift before morning start scheduled for 0830, but for whatever reason they were running 30 minutes late. So we'd dressed with shorts and rain jackets.
Reality was a little more interesting.
The walk up was 'hat blowing off' wind speed. We entered cloud about 250m from the summit at 11:00 and the rain (stinging as it hit skin sideways) began shortly thereafter. Master Scarlett was a bit of a wreck for the journey back to Thredbo top station as it was serious gusts and soaking rain all way down.
BOM data records show it hit about 11 deg C (feels like -0.8
) with wind at 65kmh (gusts to 85) at Thredbo Top Station, so likely colder and windier as we were on the summit.
Everyone pretty worn out this evening but the steak at Banjo Pattersons (Jindabyne) really hit the spot.
Note for posterity: if venturing into the high alpine region (even Australia's relatively minor one and even in the middle of summer) take ski jackets!
