So I called up and cancelled today, nice and easy over the phone. Once we got to the end of the process she asked if there was anything else she could do for me. As a matter of fact there was, so I asked her if the annual fee could be refunded pro rata for how many months I had the card. Easy as you like, she gave me $60 back, I just had to give her a BSB and Acc number for it to go in to and will be deposited in 5-7 business days, so will let you know if/when it comes through or if I have to go chasing.

She wasn't going to offer it to me, was only that I asked for it.

If it all works out it will have been 16,000 points for $15!!:D 0.09 cents per point, crazy, and I thought it was good value at 0.47 cents per point when it was $75!

Good work! A great result.

Did you get asked why you were cancelling the card so soon? If so, what reason did you give?

Hey,

Just like travelislife I got my points last week and cancelled my card today, they do put you through about 10 questions trying to get you to upgrade etc etc but I fluffed my way through them (I feel bad but probably should just say I did it for the points!). Wasn't offered but asked to have my annual fee refunded pro rata and they'll send it through to my bank, so 16,000 points for all of about $9.... bargain!

Must admit they were very pleasant over the phone, I actually asked the girl about the recent publicity over lay offs and outsourcing, she said it was all back office and that her understanding was that westpac would never outsource their front line stuff. Worth considering i suppose (if it's actually true).

For what it's worth i bank with Westpac for both business and personal. There call centre and branch staff are always an absolute pleasure to deal with. I've used there cards locally and overseas without any issues.

Towards the end of last year my credit card details were being used fraudulently by someone. They were only small $5 - $10 transactions that i hadn't noticed. They proactively re-issued my cards (without cancelling my existing ones). Before i had the chance to activate the new ones a couple of largish transactions ($40 - $50) were charged during the early hours of one morning. The immediately cancelled the old cards - and send me both a text and an email to inform me they had done it - even noting in the text that they would usually call but due to the fact it was 3am they were using alternative methods of notification.

All the charges were refunded the next day and a quick phone call had all the details confirmed and the new cards activated within a couple of hours.

I've also found there personal and business banking accounts quite reasonable as well. Small things are what impress me, especially having come from BankWest... I sometimes have to transfer largish amounts of money between accounts and banks. BankWest limit me to 5k per day and won't change it period. When i had to transfer quickly i had to do online transfers, as well as collect the maximum 3k in cash, then a further 2k from an atm and physically walk it into the other bank. My biggest peeve with this is they charge 20c per bpay payment, and because of the small limit you end up with multiple charges...

In contrast Westpac allow up to 10k, however if you need to transfer more you can have your limit temporarily raised with a quick phone call. Better still they wait on the line with you whilst you complete the transfer online, once they confirm the transfer has gone through they drop your limit immediately, so its safe/secure as well. Westpac also don't charge for bpay..

PS - i don't work for Westpac :)

Good tip mate. I'm going to cancel mine as soon as I return from O/S. Got the card in Nov and bonus points were credited in mid-Jan.

Does anyone have a copy of the t&c during promo by any chance?
