Hi guys
Looking for a bit of info or help. I am trying to get myself to Calgary over Christmas ideally getting there no later than the 23rd. Originally booked a QFF seat as far as SFO (Mel-SYd-SFO) but connections from there are over $600 for the times I land and require an overnight stay via Seattle or Vancouver to get me where I need.(land at 3:15pm need at least 3 hrs just in case then can only get a 7:30 flight air Canada via Vancouver, layover overnight, 7am flight next day to Calgary)

I’m thinking of ditching this flight altogether and using those points for some other flights we need on our trip and booking my leg MEL to Calgary direct. By the time I book the connection above and a hotel it’s not far off and the points I’ll get back will book some other legs for us.

Now I’ve been keeping an eye out over the last week or so. United is flagged at $1700 one way via La or SFO which is fine but today I noticed via Google flight search and webjet that Westjet is showing a flight for $1300. Mel to Lax on QF then an overnight in La which is fine followed by a westjet flight next day.
What’s the catch? If I search the same leg on Qantas is $2300
How can westjet sell a Qf seat cheaper than the actual airline? It says baggage is extra but I assume that’s just the LA to Calgary end which is standard. I am thinking I really want to book this but just don’t know enough about this airline and why is it coming up so much cheaper. Will i not get fed? Haha
I am a Qantas bronze customer (hubby is a gold and leaving a few days before me with the kids so I can send most luggage with them)

Thoughts? Should I book? Don’t imagine it’s going to get cheaper for Christmas?

Go for it.

The world of codeshares is complex, but your experience on a WS flight number operated by QF will be no different to booking with QF.

I just tried myself and the flight did indeed work (often google flights fails when it comes time to direct to the airline website - suddenly it's no longer available) but this one worked - roughly US$1000.

Westjet is fine - probably somewhere between JQ and VA (you'll have to pay for food on their own flight).

Catch is I'm pretty sure you won't get status credits, but you should still get points.

The WESTJET portion doesn’t even bother me one bit. I was planning to use them to get to get back from Vancouver to Lax anyway later In January. Pay for bags pay for seat pay for sneezing on board etc just like all domestic travel in the USA 🤣 and the status credits don’t matter to me I have none ( hubby is the one who needs to retain)
I was just wondering if there was a catch with this especially one I can’t see( other than an overnight in LA which doesn’t bother me)
It’s showing direct on westjet site as well as on Webjet too ( I do always like booking direct with the airline but am I safer with webjet?)
Will this likely show up in my Qantas login as a flight? Gosh I hope this works it’s a decent price

Definitely book through Westjet, not Webjet.

Not really any downsides - and no reason why this shouldn't work as it's showing on the Westjet site - I'd book away. Might be some hassles selecting seats etc but nothing major.

Not sure if it will show up on the Qantas website after you've booked - enter your frequent flyer number when you book and it might (it does for some airlines like BA) but shouldn't make a difference too much.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
