Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

Confirmation there will be (a) 'premium lounge'

It has been a long journey since The Daily Telegraph began campaigning for a second airport over a decade ago to now be eating the first-ever meal in the terminal just three months before freight operations take off.

The business class Barrington beef tenderloin and market vegetables, sourced from Western Sydney, has been prepared by Rob Smithson, head chef for dnata Asia Pacific, which is responsible for 57 million Australian airline meals every year.

As he tucks in with gusto, Hickey points to the restaurant area and premium lounge where customers will be able to eat before their flights overseas with Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand, or domestically with Qantas and Jetstar.

Does anyone know what VA's plans re WSI are? I haven't seen/can't find any actual virgin published information about their plans

They haven't announced anything and appears they probably won't serve from Day 1.

Also a good 20min video from the Runway Run.

From 3min peering through the lower level.
Flights shown by QF and JQ, but mainly the mystery airline 6X

There are no plans. VA has no intentions of flying to WSI for the short term foreseeable future.

The current VA PR for WSI is usually along the lines of "We are in constantly evaluating opportunities and we'll plan a schedule for our customers accordingly", which is PR speak for 'not for the foreseeable future'

Lots of confusions from this.

First, is the article saying, "Just so you know..." or "This is messed up..." (and for the latter, is it a hit against the tolls or Uber or someone else...)

Second, I assume this must be part of a UNSW study, not the entirety of it. If the latter, that's a damn well waste of valuable research funds (unless it was given to the vacation scholar, if even then).

Bondi Beach to WSI is approximately 75 km. Any rideshare or taxi fare of that distance will start at around $200 (for me, that's like asking to be taken from Brisbane CBD to the Gold Coast); $170 if we had removed the "exorbitant" tolls, but that's still not small change and still rivals the cost of the JQ fare they are mentioning. Aside from hoping that a driver will take your job because they'd want to have a fare assured from WSI, that's nothing out of the ordinary.

On that note, a JQ fare of around $200 to DPS probably is the base fare. Not many people realistically would spend that much net.

Others here have pointed out the very disparity of the example. The only people I can assume who would catch an Uber from Bondi all the way to WSI to catch a hypothetical JQ flight from WSI to DPS would be a courier, or someone who unfortunately needs to get to DPS and that was the last last minute fare available. If a rich kid wanted to get to DPS, they wouldn't be flying JQ unless they were that vain. If you were that budget conscious about catching that hypothetical JQ fare from WSI, then either fill up and pool in the Uber or catch public transport. With any luck, if there's no traffic, your ride time from Bondi to WSI won't match the flight time to DPS.

Very puzzling article... seems like it's been written with little regard as to generate misconception and misunderstanding than any real insight.
